Section VI finds itself in 8th place after round one, five strokes out of 7th and 44 strokes behind team leader Section III. Individually, Cody Latimer of Chautauqua Lake/Westfield finds himself in 13th place, five shots behind Brent Ito (Section I), Alec Bard (Section III) and Christian Cavaliere (Section I). Nolan Ditcher of Randolph is one stroke behind Latimer, in 20th place. The top six golfers qualify on for State Federation play next weekend at the Bethpage State Park Black course.

Section VI golf director Nate Leary, coach at Orchard Park high school, meditated on the rigors of the cold and rainy conditions that made scoring a challenge on day one:

Weather and experience played a huge factor for our players. It didn’t get out of the 40s, wind early and a period of rain. Learning to play tournaments on a course of this caliber, in these conditions, and under the kind of pressure a State Championship brings, requires a great deal of patience, determination and effort. I think all of our guys gained valuable experience today that will make them better players tomorrow and in the future.

Erich Spitz of Orchard Park was given the Section VI Coaches Award and Cody Latimer was awarded the NYSPHSAA Sportsmanship prize. See PDFs below for all team and individual results and tee times for round two. Visit the official NYSPHSAA site for a live scoring feed.
