After being down by a point going into the afternoon singles, Team USA found itself in an uncomfortably-familiar situation. It needed a turning point in its favor and it arrived in the guise of two well-rested players. Max Homa and Michael Kim, teammates at the University of California, won singles matches early and fired up their teammates. When the flags were taken down for the night, the host team had won 6.5 of 8 points in the afternoon session to take an 8-4 lead. Ironically, as individuals, the USA lads were able to rally for the team.
