A
BIT OF PROFORCE HISTORY Like most golfers, in the spring of 1999 UST's Proforce Gold shaft team was watching the Masters on Television when a flash of color caught their eye. Unlike most golfers, the Proforce Gold team knew what they were seeing, but they still could not believe it. But there it was, flashing in the sun and firmly attached to Jose Maria Olazabal's driver; the new Proforce 75 Gold shaft. How did this happen? One thing they knew for sure was that nobody was paying Olazabal to play their shaft. Heck, no one at UST even knew he was playing the Proforce 75 Gold shaft. It was a magical week for Jose Maria Olazabal and the new Proforce 75 Gold shaft. Thursday quickly became Friday, then Saturday, and Olazabal hung on with long, straight drives. And, then it was Sunday at the Masters. Huddled around their televisions, the Proforce Gold staff lived and died with every swing. And, with millions of people watching around the world, Jose Maria Olazabal reached the eighteen-tee leading the 1999 Masters. With the sun low in the Georgia sky, Olazabal reached into his bag one more time for the Proforce 75 Gold. With the lead in hand, lesser souls may have opted for a fairway-wood. Just put it in the middle of the fairway, get your four, and start the celebration. But, four days of trust in his driver and the Proforce 75 Gold shaft became one golden moment of courage. With millions watching, Jose Maria Olazabal drove the ball as far and as straight as he had ever driven a ball -- and the rest is history. With Jose Maria Olazabal victory in the 1999 Masters, UST and the Proforce Gold graphite golf shafts exploded on to the world's golfing stage. While winning the Masters jump-started the Proforce Gold's wild ride to being one of the most successful golf shafts ever produced; it was only the beginning. In 2001, Proforce Gold shafts have racked up dozens of wins on the PGA Tour and even more top ten finishes. So, how did UST's Proforce 75 Gold shaft find its way into Jose Maria Olazabal driver? Well, as it turned out, UST's European representative had a friend who had a friend who knew Olazabal had been having trouble driving the ball and suggested that he give the Proforce 75 Gold a try. Without telling anyone, he did, -- and man, are we glad he did. |
