Sadness of Mike Strantz (Part Two)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Originally posted on 2\/23\/2011 at 1:28 am.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Many of the philosophies espoused by MacKenzie serve as the bedrock fundamentals incorporated by Strantz.\u00a0 <!--more-->Where Strantz seems to earn his \u201cmaverick\u201d label is through his flair for creating dramatic holes &amp; courses unlike those seen anywhere else.\u00a0 As an artist, Mike was able to create visually stunning \u201cmasterpieces,\u201d the magnitude of which had not been experienced in the architectural arena.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the dramatic visual appeal of his holes is often interpreted as a negative by some.\u00a0 Critics, especially those ingrained in \u201ctraditional\u201d design, are quick to dismiss Strantz\u2019 work as being \u201call show\u201d with little regard for the strategic golf elements contained within.\u00a0 It is as if the magnitude of \u201cvisual awe\u201d present in Strantz\u2019 work leads these critics to conclude that artistic beauty and golf strategy are somehow mutually exclusive.<\/p>\n<p>It is this type of thinking that results in unfair criticism of Strantz\u2019 work. \u00a0However, I believe such \u201cmutually exclusive\u201d perception is a criticism aimed at certain of Mike\u2019s predecessors, rather than Strantz himself.\u00a0 There certainly have been courses created in the modern era worthy of such criticism, whereby overblown \u201cartificial\u201d holes have been created for \u201ceffect\u201d with little regard for the principles of proper golf design.\u00a0 I suspect in these instances that the designer did not have a proper understanding of shot values and strategy, and felt that visual effects could make up for those shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p>Such is not the case with Mike Strantz\u2019 work.\u00a0 For all the efforts put into creating a beautiful, artistic design, there is just as much emphasis placed on striking the right balances of risk and reward inherent in any great design.\u00a0 In addition, great emphasis is placed on accommodating golfers of various skill levels.\u00a0 As I performed a subsequent review of the Tot Hill Farm and Tobacco Road yardage books, I realized how many different options were presented, many of which I had never considered during my initial trip.<\/p>\n<p>My experience with THF &amp; TR made me question the basis of these criticisms.\u00a0 Perhaps some critics don\u2019t find it plausible that a designer can find time to give adequate consideration to both shot values and aesthetics. \u00a0\u00a0In recent years, Modern Golf Course Design has become a \u201cvolume\u201d business, with an Architect juggling multiple sites and checking in occasionally to see how his \u201cblue prints\u201d are being executed by the earth movers.<\/p>\n<p>But the solution to that is one of the great paradoxes of this supposed \u201crevolutionary.\u201d\u00a0 Strantz again harkened back to the \u201cOld School\u201d methods, working on one project at a time, living on-site until the end product was completed.\u00a0 This \u201chands on\u201d approach allowed him to dedicate the energy necessary to create such \u201cart\u201d, without sacrificing the essential elements of golf strategy.<\/p>\n<p>It is this dedication that again leads to simultaneous joy and sadness.\u00a0 Because of his dedication, we are left with courses which reflect the soul of an artist and leave lasting impressions on all who witness them.\u00a0 At the same time, his \u201cone at a time\u201d dedication means the Golf World was left with only 7 Mike Strantz creations before his much-too-early death.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, I like to call Strantz the \u201cOld School\u201d Maverick.\u00a0 This \u201crevolutionary\u201d is influenced most heavily by the principles espoused by the early classical architects, which seems to be a contradiction.\u00a0 However, this type of paradox is not unique to Strantz.\u00a0 In fact, his inspirational Dr. MacKenzie seemed to be hinting at the same paradox in <em>The Spirit of St Andrews<\/em> when he wrote:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI am by nature a revolutionary, and only too apt to scoff at tradition.\u00a0 Before visiting St. Andrews I had what were considered revolutionary ideas regarding golf courses.\u00a0 To my astonishment, when I inspected the Old Course, I found my ideals in actual practice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you love this game, you owe it to yourself to experience his creations at least once in your lifetime.\u00a0 Much like Golf is full of paradox, so too was Mike Strantz\u2019 influence on me.\u00a0 Whether from appreciating his \u201cOld School\u201d revolutionary ideas or by experiencing the conflicting joy &amp; sadness of his brief contributions to the Architectural World, Mike Strantz is a figure who any true Golf-lover should get to know.<\/p>\n<span class=\"et_bloom_bottom_trigger\"><\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Originally posted on 2\/23\/2011 at 1:28 am.
