Even though it\u2019s only two miles wide and thirteen miles long, it\u2019s a naturalist\u2019s wonderland.\u00a0 Anchored by park reserves at each end, the city is bordered by the expansive white quartz sand beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and mounded sand dunes that naturally protect the fauna and wildlife. \u00a0On your strolls you may encounter nesting loggerhead or green turtles, egrets, herons, whitetail deer and bobcats. Small in size but big on stature, it\u2019s no wonder Amelia Island was voted one of the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cntraveler.com\/galleries\/2013-10-15\/best-islands-world\/1\">Top 25 Islands in the World<\/a>\u201d by the readers of Cond\u00e9 Nast Traveler in 2013 and for eight consecutive years has been awarded a spot in the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cntraveler.com\/galleries\/2013-10-15\/best-islands-america\">Top 10 Islands in the United States<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-11340\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ae1.jpg?resize=400%2C257\" alt=\"Amelia Island Florida\" width=\"400\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ae1.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ae1.jpg?resize=300%2C193&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My most memorable moment was standing on the dock at the Harbour Marina gazing across the Amelia River which is part of the Intracoastal Waterway.\u00a0 As I waited patiently for what the locals declare is\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cFlorida\u2019s First Sunset\u201d, I realized how apropos the inscription above featured on a plaque in our condo truly was.\u00a0 \u201cGolfing on Amelia Island is the best. We love to visit when we need a rest\u201d. When I paused to watch the sun\u2019s slow descent, I was truly at rest. Not an easy feat in our wired world!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fernandina Beach<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fbfl.us\/\"><strong>Fernandina Beach<\/strong><\/a> is a vibrant Victorian seaport village that forms the hub of Amelia Island. \u00a0Boasting a 50+plus block historical district comprised of century old mansions, cottages, boutiques and interesting shops, you\u2019ll feel like you have taken a step back in time as you explore the area.\u00a0 If you find lighthouses as intriguing as I do, check out the Amelia Island Lighthouse, reportedly the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in Florida.\u00a0 Looking for more action? This is also the place to test your angling skills with world-class fishing.\u00a0 Feeling a little parched?\u00a0 Looking for a bit more history? The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omnihotels.com\/FindAHotel\/AmeliaIsland\/Golf.aspx\"><strong>Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort<\/strong><\/a> offers three 18-hole championship courses including Pete Dye\u2019s <strong>Oak Marsh<\/strong>, Bobby Weed\u2019s <strong>Ocean Links <\/strong>and Tom Fazio\u2019s <strong>Long Point<\/strong>. \u00a0Mark McCumber and Gene Littler collaborated on the 18 hole design at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfclubofamelia.com\/\"><strong>Golf Club of Amelia Island<\/strong><\/a> and there\u2019s 27 holes at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fernandinabeachgolfclub.com\/\"><strong>Fernandina Beach Golf Club<\/strong><\/a> as well as another 18 holes at the Tom Jackson\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfameliariver.com\/\"><strong>Amelia River<\/strong><\/a>. \u00a0Unfortunately we only had a chance to play two of these gems.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-11342\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ae3.jpg?resize=400%2C198\" alt=\"Amelia Island Florida\" width=\"400\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ae3.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ae3.jpg?resize=300%2C149&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.omnihotels.com\/FindAHotel\/AmeliaIsland\/Golf.aspx\"><strong>Omni Amelia Island Plantation\u2019s Ocean Links Course<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We found Ocean Links to be two different courses in one \u2013 parkland and ocean offering five seaside holes and ten heavily forested ones that wind around lakes and marshland. \u00a0The greatest stretch of maybe holes #4 through #6 where each one runs parallel to the protected dune ridges of the Atlantic Ocean but without a doubt the 6<sup>th<\/sup> hole is the most picturesque.\u00a0 Here we were treated to a spectacular view of this downhill par 3 that showcased the resort on one side and the pristine beach on the other.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Arguably hole #15 through #17 were the most difficult.\u00a0 The 15<sup>th<\/sup> tee points directly towards the ocean on this impressive uphill par 3 so the wind will always be a factor. #16 is an intimidating par 4 that again runs parallel to the ocean\u00a0 The 17<sup>th<\/sup> is a sweeping dog leg left with a pond running down the entire left side.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll find the very irregular shaped, crested Bermuda Tiff dwarf greens fast but sandy.\u00a0 In addition, the swales around greens are punishing so accuracy and distance are critical. A short approach will roll back off the green and fly it too long and watch your ball funnel off the back.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This par 70 features six par 3s and might very well be one of the most difficult courses I\u2019ve ever played and my scorecard proves it.\u00a0 I kept wondering to myself \u201cwhat if \u2026?\u201d This layout is incredible but the conditioning was less then desirable.\u00a0 I spoke to Head Professional, Dan Hackney after our round who told me \u201cwe do not over-seed and have no plans to do so in the future\u201d. Pity!<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-11336\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ae4.jpg?resize=400%2C231\" alt=\"Amelia Island Florida\" width=\"400\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ae4.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ae4.jpg?resize=300%2C173&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfclubofamelia.com\/\"><strong>The Golf Club of Amelia Island<\/strong><\/a><strong> at Summer Beach <\/strong>is a more traditional inland Florida layout that meanders through the woods with water coming into play on 13 holes.\u00a0 My favourites were the 4<sup>th<\/sup> &#8211; a par 4 with a pond running along the left side of green on your approach and the 5<sup>th<\/sup> &#8211; a par 3 over a pond with a wooden retaining wall that formed a most interesting backdrop.\u00a0 The front nine is somewhat tight but the back nine offers wider, more forgiving fairways. I found the bunkers to be soft and overall the course was well-manicured and in great condition.<\/p>\n<p>When I interviewed Head Professional, Clayton Boggs he confirmed that they do over-seed to keep the course green most of the year.\u00a0 When I asked why others do not do the same, he simply answered \u201cwe are affiliated with The Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island so our clientele expect top notch conditioning\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As the saying goes, different strokes for different folks!<br \/>\n<strong>Restaurants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While Amelia Island boasts many fabulous restaurants, one of my personal favorites was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espanadowntown.com\">Espana Restaurant &amp; Tapas<\/a>, though making a decision on what to eat was definitely a challenge with more than 17 hot and cold tapas, an amazing array of salads and numerous tempting entrees on the menu<\/p>\n<p>For lunch, I\u2019d recommend the blackened grouper sandwich at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omnihotels.com\/hotels\/amelia-island-plantation\/dining\/marsh-view-grill\">Marsh View Bar and Grill<\/a> at the 19th hole at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort.\u00a0 It was simply the freshest and best tasting fish sandwich I\u2019ve ever had.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-11337\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ae5.jpg?resize=400%2C223\" alt=\"Amelia Island Florida\" width=\"400\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ae5.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/ae5.jpg?resize=300%2C167&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>More Information<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re driving south from Buffalo it\u2019s about a 16 hour journey and not far from the Georgia state line.
