David Hanes has controlled the 18th hole this week, so when Ben Reichert came to the last with a one-hole deficit against the qualifying medalist, his chances for a half and extra holes weren’t good. True to form, Hanes won the 18th and took the match between the top two, Buffalo-Niagara, high school golfers, 2-up. With the win, Hanes moved into the semifinals of the Championship flight against Luis Carrera of Mexico. Hanes will have his hands full, as Carrera has demonstrated an ability to strike with the speed of lightning. In his quarterfinal match against Jack O’Donovan of Rochester, Carrera watched as the New Yorker birdied the 9th to cut his deficit to 0ne hole. Standing on the 13th tee, Carrera had reeled off three successive wins and turned his one-up advantage to a four-hole margin. For all reasonable purpose, the bell had tolled and Carrera was on his way to round 4 of knockout play.<\/p>\n

The second semifinal was set in the five o’clock hour. Colin Dubnik, the Rochester man on a mission, eeked out a 2 and 1 victory over Ontario’s Nick Hofland. Keeping the “international” theme alive, Billy Watson from the other side of the world (Australia) wasted little time in takingdown the youngster, Mexico’s Alejandro Madariaga, by a count of 6 and 5.<\/p>\n
