From the afternoon of Tuesday, March 24th, for 24 hours, golfers across Buffalo-Niagara voted for their favorite, public-access golf course. In a knockout-style event, 8 matches pitting 2 courses each were featured. By 4 pm on Wednesday the 25th, 8 courses had taken down their 18th flag, while 8 others moved on to the quarterfinals. If there is one area course that opens early and stays up late, it’s Terry Hills. The 27-hole layout in Batavia was expected to move a few rounds deep in this tournament, given its past support and success in votes. That’s why they don’t play the games on paper, friends! Despite an early disadvantage, Byrncliff bumped ahead in the early-morning hours and stayed in place to move on. As mentioned later in this summary, a day at Ironwood and Byrncliff is as good a 36-hole day as can be had. If you’re only up for 27, play all three nines at Terry Hills, and be sure to say “hi” to the Rotondo family. They’re all over the place, keeping it special.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Note to the municipal courses: you need to show better next time. The town of Tonawanda’s Sheridan Park golf course, easily the finest municipal layout in the area, rolled over like a sleeping baby to the Upper course at Peek’n Peak Resort. No one would dispute the value of the Peek, but let’s be honest: it’s a bit quirky. In contrast, Sheridan is a traditional layout, strong from start to finish, with as challenging a back nine as can be found across the region. And that’s public and private! The season-pass holders at Sheridan must still be in hibernation, as the PKNPK faithful came out in support of their Clymer course. The Peak advances to a round-two showdown with Harvest Hill. Let’s get ready to rumble, indeed!<\/strong><\/p>\n

No one ever wants to point fingers at friends and say “Your vote could have made the difference,” but there might be a lot of finger-pointing around Ellicottville today. Holiday Valley’s enjoyable, Black Diamond course went down to defeat. The victor was North Amherst’s Glen Oak golf club, a Robert Trent Jones, senior, original. Despite what might be the most unorthodox, finishing hole in the area, Glen Oak was able to stand tall and edge past Holiday Valley, into the second round. Glen Oak was purchased two years ago by Tim Fries and Jeff Mietus. It is the home of the western New York PGA, and will benefit from invested, local ownership. It faces Diamond Hawk golf course in the quarterfinals.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What was not expected to be quite such a mismatch, turned into a mismatch from the outset. The Links at Ivy Ridge, the main-street-Akron giant, absolutely annihilated little Ironwood, of Cowlesville. Anyone with experience at both courses, understands the similarities and the differences. Both courses put a premium on shotmaking and strategy. Ivy’s location, much closer to metro Buffalo, perhaps made it a stronger-than-expected contender. It moves on to face Willowbrook in the quarterfinal round. As for Ironwood, if you’re headed to play Byrncliff, make it a 36-hole day. The two courses sit less than two miles apart, and offer as enjoyable a day of public course golf as imaginable, in Buffalo-Niagara.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first upset of the 2020 Public Course Knockout saw unheralded Willowbrook, of Lockport, topple the Scott Witter gem, Arrowhead. The relatively-new ownership of the Akron layout was unable to muster support from its faithful, while the Lock City regulars joined forces to push Willowbrook on to the quarterfinal round. No matter which two of the three nines you play at Willowbrook, be sure to bring your straight game. It’s a shame that Arrowhead went down so early; the architecture at the Witter original is so compelling, that it deserved an extended look. Those are the vagaries of match play, however. Kudos and good luck to Willowbrook, as it faces the Links at Ivy Ridge in round two.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This match was nearly the second upset of round one. Harvest Hill barely held off TriCounty to advance to round two. The fabled, Orchard Park layout moved on, thanks to support from its Twitter followers and its top-shelf layout. The eclectic TriCounty nearly toppled the behemoth, however, thanks to tremendous effort on behalf of its membership. It will be difficult for any course to run Harvest Hill off the road to the championship, but the undulating slopes of TriCounty nearly did the trick. Harvest Hill continues on, with a matchup in round two with Peek’n Peak Resort’s Upper course. **Even thought the lower is no longer playable, we still refer to the championship layout as the Upper course.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The pride of Cheektowaga, the Diamond Hawk golf course, moved past Salamanca’s Elkdale Golf Club, into round two. Diamond Hawk jumped out to an early lead and managed to hold on to the healthy differential. Both courses are hidden gems, despite drawing on different geographies. Diamond Hawk sits across from the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport, albeit tucked away, behind the row of businesses. Elkdale rests in the rolling hills of Alleghany, in as bucolic a setting as can be imagined. Diamond Hawk moves on to face northtown stalwart Glen Oak golf club in the quarterfinal round.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Seneca Hickory Stick, the Robert Trent Jones II golf course in Lewiston, defeated the gem of the Erie County parks system, Elma Meadows. Despite having an incredibly-loyal following, Elma was unable to muster support from its clientele. SHS took an early lead, based on its intriguing layout. Hickory Stick moves on to face Byrncliff Resort in the quarterfinals. Like Elma Meadows, Byrncliff has a loyal, southtowns following. It also has the marketing machine that just might give SHS a run in the battle to reach the semifinal round.<\/strong><\/p>\n
