I have a love\/hate relationship with fantasy sports.<\/p>\n
I recognize the added interest and intrigue fantasy sports add to watching professional sports. Even when your favorite team isn\u2019t performing at a top level – you have something to watch and root for each week. Still, one of my least favorite phrases in the English language goes something like this, \u201cI want Sergio to win but I need McIlroy to get some birdies for my fantasy team.\u201d Or, even worse, \u201cI want the Bills to win but I need Matt Moore to toss four TDs.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hate it. I hate hearing about how people would rather foot for fantasy teams than the people who represent their cities and passions. I\u2019m a Sergio Garcia fan. I root for Sergio Garcia to win each week (unless it\u2019s a Ryder Cup week – then I root for the United States) and if he\u2019s not playing or in contention – I root for good stories. I want to see Tiger return to form. I want McIlroy to continue his assault on the record books. I want David Duval to play and win in big events. I\u2019m always up for an underdog\u2019s quest. Stories like those are reasons to root and invest yourself – and they\u2019re much better reasons than fantasy team interests.<\/p>\n
Earlier this week I received Mo Golf\u2019s invite to fantasy golf 2012 and it found me squarely on the fence. I don\u2019t like fantasy sports, but I like taking part and keeping in touch with the guys. I went back and forth and finally set up a team name. I can do fantasy sports without letting it impact my rooting interest.. I\u2019m sure.<\/p>\n
Fortunately, I\u2019ll be spared having to worry about it. Friday came and went and I forgot to register my picks for the first tournament of the year. When I tune in this weekend I\u2019ll be able to watch and not worry about any fictional team…<\/p>\n
I recognize that 99 % of other golf\/sports fans simply don\u2019t have an issue with all of this and that\u2019s fine. Best of luck to all of you in your fantasy quests.
