{"id":4951,"date":"2012-07-15T13:55:46","date_gmt":"2012-07-15T17:55:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/?p=4951"},"modified":"2012-07-15T16:33:44","modified_gmt":"2012-07-15T20:33:44","slug":"southwestern-colorado-you-are-so-beautiful-to-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/southwestern-colorado-you-are-so-beautiful-to-me\/","title":{"rendered":"Southwestern Colorado \u2013 You are so beautiful to me!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most people I talk to associate Colorado with Coors beer, the Denver Bronco\u2019s Mile High Stadium and world renowned downhill snow skiing at Vale and Aspen mountains.\u00a0\u00a0 What many don\u2019t realize is that Colorado is a land of contrasts with a diverse topography that ranges from flat-topped mesas to raging rivers valleys, from lush orchards to desolate desert badlands.\u00a0 Head for the southwestern corner of the state and discover nature at her finest along with endless year round opportunities for any golfer or outdoor sport enthusiast.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>We concentrated our tour in the Grand Valley region between Montrose and Grand Junction.\u00a0 This area offers moderate weather with little, if any, snow and boasts at least 275 days of sunshine every year.\u00a0\u00a0 TourismReview.com recently ranked Grand Junction as number seven in their \u201cTop 8 Sunniest Cities in the USA\u201d which almost guarantees great golfing weather.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4953\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/southwestern-colorado-you-are-so-beautiful-to-me\/the_bridges_a-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4953\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4953\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4953\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/The_Bridges_A1.jpg?resize=300%2C117\" alt=\"The Bridges\" width=\"300\" height=\"117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/The_Bridges_A1.jpg?resize=300%2C117&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/The_Bridges_A1.jpg?resize=1024%2C402&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/The_Bridges_A1.jpg?w=2160 2160w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4953\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Bridges<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our adventure began in Montrose, about forty five minutes south of our starting point in Grand Junction but definitely worth the drive to experience one of the country\u2019s most unique landscapes and some spectacular golf.\u00a0 Our first stop was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montrosebridges.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Bridges Golf &amp; Country Club<\/strong><\/a>, a Nicklaus design, set along side the foothills of the San Juan Mountains in the heart of Montrose.\u00a0 Open nine months of the year this course caters to golfers of every caliber with four sets of tees ranging from 5,380 to over 7,200 yards on this par 71 layout but be forewarned, the gold tees have a course rating of 73.9 and a slope of 140 so pick a distance that best suits your game.\u00a0 Jack has added some unique features like the third hole with its split fairway and the 15th, an intimidating par 5 with two greens.\u00a0 My personal favorite is the 9th hole, a par 5 with water running all the way down the left that eventually crosses the fairway on your second shot leaving you with a well-bunkered green on the right and water guarding the left.\u00a0 This property was recently bought out from receivership and now offers great conditions with an outstanding western-feeling clubhouse. The Bridges also offers a choice of four well-appointed rooms that could serve as your base camp while you explore the entire area.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4962\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/southwestern-colorado-you-are-so-beautiful-to-me\/cobble_creek_hole_13\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4962\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4962\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4962\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cobble_Creek_Hole_13.jpg?resize=300%2C92\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"92\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cobble_Creek_Hole_13.jpg?resize=300%2C92&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cobble_Creek_Hole_13.jpg?resize=1024%2C316&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Cobble_Creek_Hole_13.jpg?w=2160 2160w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4962\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lucky 13th at Cobble Creek<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cobblecreek.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Links at Cobble Creek<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0near Montrose is an 18-hole links-style layout perched 5,800 feet above sea level that can be played from 5,133 up to 6,982 yards, all year long!\u00a0 There are ten lakes and a creek winding through the course ensuring that water will come into play on almost every hole.\u00a0 The greens are large, true and fast with plenty of undulation and the bunkers are some of the best I have played.\u00a0 This is a player friendly course built on sandy soil offering great views of the San Juan Mountains however it is not as photogenic as some of the other courses.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4961\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/southwestern-colorado-you-are-so-beautiful-to-me\/black_canyon\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4961\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4961\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4961\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Black_Canyon.jpg?resize=300%2C236\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Black_Canyon.jpg?resize=300%2C236&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Black_Canyon.jpg?resize=1024%2C808&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Black_Canyon.jpg?w=1076&amp;ssl=1 1076w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4961\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Black Canyon&#8230;Not A Golf Hole!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While in Montrose you absolutely must make time to explore the Black Canyon at Gunnison National Park, a breathtaking 2,700 foot deep gorge carved out by the Gunnison River that stretches 53 miles. It\u2019s ideal for white water rafting, fishing, hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding and nature walking.\u00a0 For Stay and Play Packages in Montrose you can <a href=\"www.daysinnmontrose.com\/projects.html\" target=\"_blank\">visit their site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4954\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/southwestern-colorado-you-are-so-beautiful-to-me\/devil_s_thumb_hole_13\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4954\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4954\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4954\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Devil_s_Thumb_Hole_13.jpg?resize=300%2C189\" alt=\"Devils Thumb Hole 13\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Devil_s_Thumb_Hole_13.jpg?resize=300%2C189&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Devil_s_Thumb_Hole_13.jpg?resize=1024%2C645&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Devil_s_Thumb_Hole_13.jpg?w=1614&amp;ssl=1 1614w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4954\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 13th at Devil&#8217;s Thumb<\/p><\/div>\n<p>About 22 miles north is the quaint old western feeling town of Delta, best known for The Grand Mesa, the largest flat-topped mountain in the world with over 300 pristine lakes to boat, fish and hike around.\u00a0 Here we played the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.devilsthumbgolfclub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Devil\u2019s Thumb Golf Club<\/strong><\/a> an 18-hole municipal course that is tucked in between the foothills of the Grand Mesa, San Juan Mountains, Black Canyon and the Uncompahgre Plateau and quite possibly the most uniquely scenic course in the world.\u00a0 It almost feels like you are playing on a lunar landscape with sixty bunkers and two lakes surrounded by snow-capped mountains.\u00a0\u00a0 Architect Rick Phelps described his design as a \u201cprairie style\u201d course that was built some 5,100 feet above sea level yet is still open 365 days a year.\u00a0 There are five sets of tees ranging from 5,180 up to 7,176 yards. The first two holes are fairly flat as you start on top of a mesa but once you get to the downhill 3rd hole you will be amazed at the elevation changes in the valley. The fairways are hard as this course is built on the Adobe badlands with a clay and Morrison stone base that dates back to the dinosaurs.\u00a0 My only negative is that the bunkers are shallow with pebbly sand and hard pan underneath.\u00a0 Adult green fees start at $25 \u2013 a fabulous deal and definitely worth a visit!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4964\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/southwestern-colorado-you-are-so-beautiful-to-me\/deer_creek_hole_14\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4964\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4964\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4964\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Deer_Creek_Hole_14.jpg?resize=300%2C199\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" id=\"caption-attachment-4964\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cedarege Hole The 14th<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cedaredgegolf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Cedaredge Golf Club<\/strong><\/a>, formerly known as Deer Creek Village Golf Club, is 6,100 feet above sea level, located 15 miles northeast of Delta and nestled in the southern foothills of the Grand Mesa featuring two distinctively different layouts.\u00a0 The front nine has more of a resort-style feel with flat wide open fairways, small greens and water that comes into play on eight of the nine holes.\u00a0 The back nine is the exact opposite with extreme elevation changes and tight tree lined fairways.\u00a0 In fact the downhill par 5, 12th is one of the tightest you will find anywhere and is followed up by a tough uphill par 5 with a creek crossing the fairway.<\/p>\n<p>From Delta we drove back north to Grand Junction, the largest city in the region and best known for The Colorado National Monument.\u00a0 This 23,000 acre prehistoric national park offers jaw dropping views of the red sandstone spires with over 50 miles of hiking trails that overlook cherry and peach orchards with 19 nearby wineries to explore and taste.\u00a0 Here we played two more courses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4957\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/southwestern-colorado-you-are-so-beautiful-to-me\/tiara_rado_18th\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4957\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4957\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4957\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Tiara_Rado_18th.jpg?resize=300%2C206\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" id=\"caption-attachment-4957\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">18th at Tiara Rado<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.golfgrandjunction.net\/course_tr\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Tiara Rado Golf Course<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is an Audubon certified municipal track built at the base of the Colorado National Monument.\u00a0 The front nine is player friendly but non eventful whereas the back nine is more picturesque with water in play on almost every hole.\u00a0 The greens are fast and in good condition and the strategically placed fairway bunkers are always in play.\u00a0 The 18th is my favourite hole and the one of best photo opportunities you will find anywhere.\u00a0 Perched on an elevated tee with a pond on the right, sage brush on the left, the narrow landing area will leave you with an elevated green with ragged red cliffs as a backdrop.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4959\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/southwestern-colorado-you-are-so-beautiful-to-me\/redlands_mesa_hole_18\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4959\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4959\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4959\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/buffalogolfer.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Redlands_Mesa_Hole_18.jpg?resize=300%2C199\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" id=\"caption-attachment-4959\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Closer @ Redlands Mesa<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.redlandsmesa.com\/club\/scripts\/section\/section.asp?NS=PG\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa<\/strong><\/a> is one of the most unique and dramatic courses that I have ever played.\u00a0 Continuously ranked in \u201cAmerica\u2019s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses\u201d since 2005, this layout reminds me of the controversial Michael Stantz designed Tobacco Road in North Carolina.
