The Golfczar <\/i><\/b>plays more than 100 rounds of golf per year and has played more than 200 golf courses in the United States and Canada during a golfing career that spans\u00a0 seven decades.\u00a0 He\u2019s played many 5 star golf courses, including several that are ranked in Golf Digest\u2019s Annual Top 100 Best Public Courses.\u00a0 <\/i>He\u2019s also played his share of \u201cdog tracks\u201d so when it comes to ranking public golf courses, as the saying goes, he knows whereof one speaks.<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/b><\/p>\n

Ranking public courses is a subjective task, but most public golf course players will agree with the criteria The Czar <\/i>used to come up with his list of the top courses in our area.\u00a0 These criteria, in order of importance, are:<\/b><\/p>\n

1. CONDITIONING<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

I grew up playing Caz and would love to include it on my list, but you can\u2019t crack my top 20 if your greens run at 3 on the stimpmeter and your tee boxes are dirt patches.\u00a0 I want smooth, fast greens and fairways that aren\u2019t loaded with divots.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

2. VALUE<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Public course players always want the best bang for their buck.\u00a0 If money wasn\u2019t an issue, we would all belong to private country clubs.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 DESIGN VARIETY<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A general term to describe the challenge from each set of tees, memorable holes, placement of hazards, different lengths of holes, shapes and contour of the greens, etc.\u00a0 Ironwood has a few decent holes but I can\u2019t get beyond how most of the course looks like some fairways and greens were plopped into a cow pasture.\u00a0 As a result, it doesn\u2019t make my list.<\/b><\/p>\n

4. AESTHETICS<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Stand on the 12th tee box at Peek \u2018n Peak Upper or the 15th<\/sup> fairway at Byrncliff and look around – the views will take your breath away.\u00a0 Attention to detail, like well kept flower beds and smooth running golf carts also add pleasure to any round of golf.<\/b><\/p>\n

5.\u00a0 AMBIENCE<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Pace of play and just the general feeling of playing the course.\u00a0 A pretty beverage cart babe and comfortable 19th<\/sup> hole doesn\u2019t hurt the experience either.<\/b><\/p>\n

The Golfczar\u2019s<\/i><\/b> top 20 Public Golf Courses in Western New York:<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

20.\u00a0 18 Mile Creek (formerly Hamburg)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

First, a disclaimer – The Czar has been a member of the Hamburg Men\u2019s Golf Club for 25 years so there is some bias in this selection.\u00a0 However, 18 Miles Creek\u2019s well maintained greens (among the finest you will find anywhere) gives it the edge over several courses which don\u2019t make my list, such as South Shore.<\/b><\/p>\n

19.\u00a0 Chestnut Hill<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Like many of you, my main exposure to this course has been playing in charity scramble golf tournaments.\u00a0 Course is usually in decent shape, albeit with very slow greens, and excellent value if you\u2019ve ever had their lunch and steak dinner which is part of their standard tournament package.<\/b><\/p>\n

18.\u00a0 Dande Farms<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Fairways can get hard and burned out, but the greens and tee boxes are always in fine shape.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

17.\u00a0 Buffalo Tournament Club<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Huge, fast greens that both help and hurt the ranking of this course.\u00a0 Helps in the sense that we all love big, fast greens; but your handicap could get hurt (go down) because you will find yourself putting for birdie here instead of trying to get up and down for par from a similar distance at most other courses.<\/b><\/p>\n

16.\u00a0 Deerwood<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Played several WNY PUBLINKS tournaments at Deerwood and always enjoyed the experience.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

15.\u00a0 ELMA MEADOWS<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

If you grew up in South Buffalo in the 60\u2019s, you had two choices – Caz or Elma Meadows.\u00a0 I was one of those crazy guys who slept in my car before dawn in Elma\u2019s parking lot in order to get an early tee time.\u00a0 Beautiful, traditional designed course and ranking is this low only because conditions aren\u2019t up to the standard of the top courses in the area.<\/b><\/p>\n

14.\u00a0 ELKDALE<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve only played it once in a BDGA tournament and frankly thought it was a private course until I saw it on Mo\u2019 Golf\u2019s list.\u00a0 I do remember having a very pleasant round of golf and a wonderful meal afterwards.<\/b><\/p>\n

13.\u00a0 Chautauqua<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

As Mo\u2019 Golf did with his list, I am considering both the Lake and Hill courses together for this list.\u00a0 Considered separately, each course would rank lower because each course has its share of weak holes.\u00a0 But together both courses have a bunch of very memorable holes.<\/b><\/p>\n

12.\u00a0 Peek \u2018n Peak Lower<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Scratch golfers would scoff at this ranking, but it has everything for the average player.\u00a0 Great conditions and super friendly staff makes for an enjoyable day.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been going to the Peak for a weekend in July for 30 years and the experience gets better every year.<\/b><\/p>\n

11.\u00a0 Willowbrook<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Again, very little exposure to this course because Lockport is simply too far for me to travel to play golf (and have a couple of beers afterward).\u00a0\u00a0 I do remember wishing it was a little closer to home when I have played it.<\/b><\/p>\n

10.\u00a0 Sheridan<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Call me to play when they cut down that tree on the dogleg on the first hole.\u00a0 Just kidding.\u00a0 I always envied Tonawanda residents – buy one pass and you get to play both Sheridan and Brighton.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

9.\u00a0 Tri County<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Conditioning and design are the primary reasons why I rank this course so high.\u00a0 However, unless you have a lot of course knowledge, it may not be a lot of fun to play.\u00a0 Very difficult, even from the member tees.<\/b><\/p>\n

8. Arrowhead<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

I loved this course when it opened.\u00a0 We finally had a high end public course option without traveling to Canada.\u00a0 But a bunch of courses have either opened or stepped up their game in recent years and dropped this course from where it would have been 10 years ago.\u00a0 Why do their greens look like mine fields late in the season?<\/b><\/p>\n

7. Byrncliff<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Beautiful design, good conditions and aesthetics as fine as you will find anywhere.\u00a0 A great value as well.<\/b><\/p>\n

6.\u00a0 Diamond Hawk<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

I love the opening three holes.\u00a0 They will challenge you but won\u2019t put the fear into your heart like the opening holes of some other courses (see Sheridan).<\/b><\/p>\n

5.\u00a0 Glen Oak<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Value, value, value.\u00a0 $35 green fees before 10:00 Mon-Fri and the best GPS system I\u2019ve ever seen.<\/b><\/p>\n

4.\u00a0 Links at Ivy Ridge<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

It actually combines the best of a Links design with a more traditional design.\u00a0 Always in great shape, excellent value, friendly staff and comfortable 19th<\/sup> hole.<\/b><\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 Seneca Hickory Stick<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Value separates the top 3 on my list.\u00a0 As nice as Hickory Stick is, the green fees are substantially higher than Harvest Hill and Harvest Hill is every bit the equal to Hickory Stick regardless of how you measure them.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

2.\u00a0 Harvest Hill<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Another disclaimer – I\u2019m a pass holder at Harvest Hill, so a little more bias.\u00a0 But I consider the investment I made with the pass this year the wisest investment I may have ever made in this game.\u00a0 Tremendous amount of money being invested into the course under the new owner and it will rival any private country club in this area when the work is finished, in my humble (and biased) opinion.<\/b><\/p>\n

1. Peek \u2019n Peak Upper<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Did I mention I\u2019ve played more than 200 different golf courses in my life?\u00a0 Well, for the past 15 years (or since the upper course opened), the Peak upper has been the benchmark that I\u2019ve measured every other course I\u2019ve played against.\u00a0 I\u2019ve played many courses that are its equal, but have yet to play one that surpasses it.\u00a0 Expensive, but great value when you play it as part of a stay and play package.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
