If you’ve paid attention to “all” the golf news, you know that the first major championship of the year belongs to the ladies. Out in California, somewhere in the desert, the Nabisco Championship is under way. Stacy Lewis, an early-twenties pro, is currently three shots ahead at the halfway point. Close behind are world #1 Yani Tseng, Jane Park and 1st round co-leader Brittany Lincicome.
Lewis, a scoliosis survivor, appears to have one of the brightest futures among the younger set on tour. Her one victory to date, the Northwest Arkansas Classic, came as an amateur and carries an asterisk, as it was way rain-shortened! She has contended in regular and major tournaments before and will gain valuable experience over this April weekend, win or lose.
All signs point to a fourth victory in 2011 for Tseng. She has been nearly unstoppable this year, adding victories in Thailand and Australia to her vitae. She is also the defending champion at this year’s event and would seem a shoo-in for the title, except that…
Lincicome has won here, too. In 2009, Brittany Lincicome held off Christie Kerr and Kristy McPherson by one single blow to capture her first professional major title. Within striking distance are 2007 champion Morgan Pressel, last week’s victor-Sandra Gal, and Michelle Wie, who once tied for third as a teenager at the Nabisco.
