This is a strong group. I am partial to Elma #11 because I always feel like I stole something when I make a par there, even with two good shots.
Hope those Elma guys agree…that is definitely a par 4.5 hole and deserving of consideration. It’s random how certain hole numbers give a stronger cadre than others.
I agree with Mo’golf. For difficulty, 11 at Elma rules. It generally plays into the wind, and one hits the drive into an upslope – a real distance killer.
For sheer beauty, there’s nothing like playing over a quarry (or through it) at CCB.
11 at Glen Oak? Another par 4.5 – no big deal.
There’s no question Elma’s hole is most difficult, but CCB’s number 11 is absolutely beautiful! I beong to Cragburn. Compared to the rest of our course, Eleven is nothing spectacular. Hitting over that awesome, small quarry at CCB, makes that hole!!!! 11 at Glen Oak: I’ve made birdie many times as well as many 7’s and 8’s! Another great hole!
Bronze15, shame on you! #11 green at Crag Burn is the best and most difficult on the course. Lonnie taught me to avoid the temptation of the sand and to aim at his shop door. #11 forces you to shoot away from the green on the tee ball, in order to approach it from the proper distance. Who would want a half shot into that green, with sand, green quadrants and water back and left as punishment? Might be the best hole on the course!
The 11th at Elma again illustrates the great strength of Harries / Tryon designs – the perfect use of natural slopes in the drive zone.
In some ways, Elma’s drive is like the uphill version of Augusta’s 10th. If you leave the drive out to the right, you get zero roll. You hit down the center and left, preferably with a little draw, you will get an extra 30 yards of roll. Trajectory control is greatly rewarded.
It’s quite interesting, with both an upslope & downslope in the potential landing area. You hit a solid, well-positioned drive and you get the “bonus” that may leave a short/mid iron in your hand (vs. Wood/Hybrid).
In case there was any confusion, the Terry Hills nominee is the “old” 11th (currently the 20th hole). This is the one with the pond short of the green.
A neat hole with an “over-the-rise” tee shot, and then a number of options / angles of attack for the second & third shots.
Mo’Golf,
16 is the best hole at Crag Burn.
In my humble opinion.
