The opening ceremony, consisting principally of team introductions, flag raisings and lineup revelations, took place between 5:30 and 6:30 on a glorious Friday evening. September is sometimes given a raw deal, as she represents the end of summer. Today, she shone in her brightest fabric. The location was the 18th fairway, below the putting surface. The US Military Academy band marched in and played a series of numbers. Then came dignitaries and the teams, followed by a piper crossing from the opposite side of the fairway stage. After the speeches and expressions of gratitude, three flags (Great Britain, Ireland, USA) were raised and the piper departed. Having the freedom to move around inside the ropes was a godsend.
