The Erie County Amateur debuted brilliantly in 2012, honoring the legacy of championship golf in western New York. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of John McDermott’s US Open triumph at Country Club of Buffalo (now Grover Cleveland golf course), an opening 62 provided the impetus for Ryan Hawkins to claim the first men’s title in a playoff. Michelle Hanes also won a playoff, for the women’s title.
2013 brings the second playing of the event, this year at the county’s other golf course, Elma Meadows. The event will be contested July 6th and 7th at the William Harries-designed golf course. Defending champions Hanes and Hawkins will return to do their level best to retain their championship belts. Sean Mahon, who battled Hawkins to the wire last year and Dan Yustin, 2013 WNY Open champion, will challenge for the title.
