The Monroe Invitational, first contested in 1937, takes place this week in Pittsford, a suburb of Rochester. The event is to Rochester what the Porter Cup represents for Buffalo-Niagara. The world’s finest amateur golfers take their best shot at a traditional, Donald J. Ross, jr. golf course, owned by a distinguished private club. The Monroe golf club stretches to 6962 yards, playing to a par of 70. Golfers are fortunate to play over the tumbling terrain found on most courses in Pittsford. Although it counts as neighbors the Country Club of Rochester, Oak Hill and Irondequoit, Monroe may be the single best example of Ross’ genius in the area. Take a tour of the golf course’s front nine and experience the course for yourself. If you can make it out Wednesday through Saturday to watch the action, admission is free and open to the public.
