Twelve golfers representing the Monsignor Martin Association traveled to Pleasant Valley, NY to the James Baird State Park golf course on Friday, May 31st. The purpose of the sojourn was the 2013 State Catholic High School Athletic Association golf championship, a one-round shootout with a desirable prize attached.

The top six individuals would qualify on to the 2013 Federation Championship, a team match between representatives of CHSAA, NYSAIS (Independent Schools) NYSPHSAA (Public Schools) and NYC public shools. The venue for the June 9th event is none other than fabled Bethpage Black, site of the 2002 and 2009 US Open championships.

The James Baird course can be effectively compared with Elma Meadows, only longer, hillier and sandier. The medal was claimed at 74 strokes and a 79 earned a spot in a playoff for the final qualifying spot. Among the representatives from the Monsignor Martin Association were Gregory Sibick (sophomore) and Jake Ziegler (senior) from Nichols School. Sibick turned in a 75, good for second place, while Ziegler signed for a 78, worth 4th place after a playoff. Drew Monahan of St. Joes, lost a playoff for the 6th qualifying position.

Sibick and Ziegler will play a practice round on Saturday the 8th, then compete on Sunday the 9th as representatives of western New York and the SCHSAA.
