Home course favorite Kyle Gay upheld the charge of the old guard with a one-under 71 on Thursday, placing himself one back of leader and defender Jake Katz. Tied with Gay are 2011 Porter Cup contestants Matt Stasiak and Chris Covelli, and former district champion Frank Garcia, jr. Lurking 2 strokes off the lead is a quintet of talented golfers: Raman Luthra, Tony Hejna, Chris Garvey, Colin Burns and Billy Wisniewski. In all, 22 players sit within five strokes of the lead, with 36 holes to play. The tournament runs through Saturday at Brookfield Country Club in Clarence. Admission is free to the public.
