The Erie County Interscholastic Conference held its annual golf championship on Tuesday, October 15th at Diamond Hawk golf course in Cheektowaga. Nine golfers shot scores low enough to receive conference All-Star recognition. Twenty-six more were designated division all-stars and twenty-four golfers overall shot scores low enough to qualify for the spring 2014 Section VI golf championship, the qualifier for the NYSPHSAA state team and individual championships.

Medalist for the day was Orchard Park high school junior Erich Spitz. The Quaker matched the par of the course with a 72, good for a three-stroke margin of victory over runners-up J.P. Rehak (Williamsville South) and Jon Needham (West Seneca West.)

Orchard Park qualified four golfers for the spring sectionals, while Eden, Williamsville North and West Seneca West each had three players advance to the region’s big dance. Iroquois and Lake Shore each saw a pair of team members move ahead in the competition. ECIC and Section VI golf chairman Nate Leary (Orchard Park) indicated that the qualifying scores were the lowest seen in many a year, testament to the quality of golf played in the region.
