First Round Tee Times: Top 7 Groups To Follow
Our experts have combed the tee sheet, and these are the 7 groups you should follow. The Porter Cup tees off at 7:30 am on Wednesday the 24th. 1st and 2nd round groups are the same, then players will be reassigned, based on score. Early groups on Wednesday go off later on Thursday, and vice-versa. 2nd round tee times are either 2.5 hours later or earlier, depending on 1st round position. We’ve determined that the following groups are the critical ones to see on Wednesday and Thursday. By trophy time on Saturday, the winner will have emerged from one of these groups. You’ll be able to brag that you followed the champion before anyone else knew the story. Here goes!
1. 11:10/8:40 Kevin O’Connell, the current USGA Mid-Amateur champion, tees off with Noah Norton (Georgia Tech) and Josh Whalen (Kent State.) O’Connell is the most likely mid-am to challenge for the title.
2. 11:20/8:50 Includes Matt Parziale (2017 US Mid-Am champ), Garrett Rank, and Tyler Strafaci. 2 are out of college, while Strafaci is a senior at Georgia Tech. He and Parziale hope to catch the eye of Nathaniel Crosby, USA Walker Cup captain, who will be on site Friday and Saturday. Strafaci finished 5th last week at the Players Amateur.
3. 11:00/8:30 The top two golfers by WAGR Ranking are in this game. Chun An Yu (#7) and John Pak (#22) will tee off with Scott Harvey (2014 US Mid-Am champion.) On paper, the strongest grouping.
4. 9:00/11:30 Local favorite #1, Ben Reichert of East Amherst, competes with Koichiro Ishika (Arizona State) and John Catanzaro (Georgia).
5. 8:00/10:30 Local favorite #2, David Hanes of Elma, matches up with John Felitto (Notre Dame) and Sudarshan Yellamaraju (Canadian Junior Team).
6. 8:20/10:50 Matthew Riedel, an incoming freshman at Vanderbilt, goes off with Blake Dyer (Florida) and Bradley Reeves (Arizona.)
7. 11:30/9:00 James Piot (Michigan State) had a top-25 finish last week at the Players Amateur. He pegs it with Herbie Aikens and Adrian Norford, possibly the first golfer from St. Kitts to compete in the Porter Cup.
Darren Clarke’s British Open Win Erases Pain Of Watson’s Loss…For Me!
My colleague and friend, Kevin Lynch, wrote a piece on his visceral reaction years after Tom Watson lost the British Open at age 59 to fate and Stewart Cink. I thought about that act of chance recently when I revisited the unlikely triumph of Darren Clarke at Royal...
A Round Without A Driver
The next time I tee it up - I'm not going to leave the driver in the bag. I'm going to leave it in the storage closet, behind the roller blades I never use and maybe underneath some blankets and sheets I never pick up. If you've been reading my Operation Don't Suck...

WNYPGA Wellsville Pro-Am
Shawn Adamczyk, from the Kahkwa Club, shot -5 (66) to capture his first WNYPGA win of the 2011 season. Great job Shawn! In the 2 best balls of 5 team portion, Ed Suchora and Jay Sutherland lead Myma Adderly and Jason and John Sleggs to first place with a score of...
PGA Championship Quick Hits
The past few trips around the clock have been busy days and long nights for The Mouth That Roars and I haven’t been able to fully think or comment on what happened at the 2011 PGA Championship. That means it’s time for another round of quick hits…. ~ I think we need...
Tom Tucker Tips: Coping With Slow Play
Slow play can get to you if you let it. Here are a couple of things that I do: 1) Stay loose, keep your back stretched out and swing two irons with "momentum" swings while you are waiting. A "momentum" swing is a full but gentle swing. 2) Stay calm, remind yourself...
Technology Debate, Again
Recently Nick Faldo and another talking head were discussing the state of technology and professional golf. They both agreed that equipment and ball technology have almost mandated that courses hosting PGA events need to be in the range of 7400+ yards (such as the...
Penal versus Playable: Golf Course Architecture Primer
Two schools of golf course architecture are playing smash-up derby this weekend at Atlanta Athletic Club, as Penal versus Playable butt heads as scores soar over the final four at the PGA Championship. Some one wrote once about the High hole (#11) at St. Andrews Old,...
Confusion Across The World
There must be a number of confused golf fans tuning into the PGA Championship this weekend. Guys and gals sitting down for a nice afternoon of major championship golf and wondering to themselves... “I thought that Tiger guy was back?” For weeks, Tiger has been the...
Refreshing Commentary From The PGA Championship
It's Saturday morning on the east coast of the USA. In the Atlanta suburbs, a major championship is taking shape in a most peculiar way. Gents who have played well all year, have not done so this week. Say so long to Martin Kaymer, Jason Day, Bo Van Pelt and Cameron...
Calm Down, Everybody
It was ugly. It was sandy; wet at times too. In all, it was about 10 shots more than anyone could have hoped it would be, but Tiger Woods opening round 77 isn't as earth-shattering as everyone's making it. Understand something, the guys makes four less swings and he's...
Gary Forgets Garcia
I mean this in the nicest way – but Sergio Garcia belongs on a list of the best players never to win a major. I reiterate that I mean it in a nice way because usually one’s inclusion on the list is a painful reminder of their failure to capture one of golf’s greatest...
