If anyone thought that there were strokes to be made up on Monday in the individual portion of the 2014 NYSPHSAA boys golf state championship, anyone was incorrect. The team race was another matter. Jack Gianniny, one of four co-leaders after Sunday’s first round, ran off his other three challengers with a two-under 69 on day two, good for a total of 142 and the individual championship. Three strokes behind, in second place, was Kyle Mathews. Third place, at 146, belonged to Josh Goldenberg. Joe Blando made the day’s biggest move, improving nine strokes, from 78 to 69, to secure a tie for 4th place. Those four plus Devin Delisle (t4) and Gunnar Doyle (6th) will represent NYSPHSAA at this weekend’s Federation Championship at Bethpage Black on Long Island.

Gianniny and Doyle’s Section V team held a four-stroke, overnight lead over Section I. On Monday, as the Robert Trent Jones course at Cornell University turned sour, Section I made up fourteen strokes and captured the team title by ten over Section V. Third place belonged to Section VIII, 8 behind the runners-up and 18 behind the champions. Western New York’s Section VI team took seventh place out of eleven teams, three strokes out of sixth place. Nolan Ditcher of Randolph High School earned a 19th-place tie with round of 77 and 78. He was the low scorer for Section VI.
