Porter Cup 2019: Day 3 Debriefing

Chun An Yu gives a bit of hope to the field

Chun An Yu continued to show himself as the class of the 2019 Porter Cup field. He posted his third round in the 60s, and separated himself from the field. After 38 consecutive holes without a bogey, the Taiwanese golfer from Arizona State made four at the lat, dropping back to -12 and giving the field the slightest bit of hope. On his heels is Aiden Didone from Melbourne, Australia. Didone posted the day’s low round, 65, to jump to -9 and a final-round tee time with Chun and Tyler Strafaci, of Florida and Georgia Tech.

The leader began the day in a tie with Reid Davenport of Texas and Vanderbilt. Davenport had posted 3 bogies through his first 36 holes, but stumbled to 4 on Friday. He countered with 3 birdies, to remain within shouting distance of the leader. Davenport will anchor the penultimate threesome, with Davis Lamb and Matt Parziale. Lamb posted his 3rd 68 of the tournament, and remains our selection for most likely to go low. If he does so on Saturday, he will wear the winner’s green jacket at dusk. Parziale turned in a clean card of 5 birdies and 0 bogies, matching Didone for day’s low round. The Massachusetts fireman is no stranger to match-play triumph on the national level, but a stroke-play title would elevate him to serious consideration for this year’s USA Walker Cup side.

Realistically, Chun An Yu should turn in another score in the 60s. If he posts one-under on Saturday, he will reach -13 for the week. That would require a mid- to low-60s number from any of his chasers. By our calculations, seven golfers (Didone, Strafaci, Davenport, Lamb, Parziale, James Piot and John Pak) have a chance at catching the leader. For the -4 and -3 golfers, a course record-matching round of 60 would be needed to enter the fray.

While we prepare for round four (Tee Sheet Here)and contemplate the myriad possible outcomes, have a look at a series of videos posted by @OPGolfCoach on Twitter. Stationed at the desirable confluence of holes 15, 16 and 17, Nate Leary whipped out his phone and rolled tape.

My Movement Toward Golf Fitness: Installment II

Prelude: I've been working for two weeks with some simple exercises that Marie Achkar gave me on Saturday, November 12th, during our first meeting. I ran a comfortable Turkey Trot on Thursday, avoided all the heavy food that afternoon by washing dishes constantly,...

Thankful Thoughts With A Side of Stuffing…

This column is in many ways, a day late. Yesterday was Thanksgiving and thus the day we are supposed to proclaim all that we are thankful for in our lives. In that way, I am a rebel. I am choosing to talk about all the golf things I'm thankful for - a day late....

Stolen Holes: Special Installment (I Wasn’t Playing!)

On Tuesday before Thanksgiving, on the off-chance that the Buffalo Turkey Trot would be run in less than ideal weather, I hit the Delaware Park Meadows circuit for three laps, roughly around 5.5 miles. One of those survival runs where the wind crashes into your chest,...

GOP hopefuls on the links

With golf being a large part of the lives of many past (and current) presidents of the US, I thought it may help those aligned with the Republican Party to have a brief appraisal of the golfing abilities of the GOP's slate of hopeful candidates for the 2012...

Duval Sets Ego Aside For Love of Game

We respect people for different reasons  - we admired Tiger for his greatness; we marvel at Rory McIlroy for his potential; we love Phil because of his swashbuckling style; we enjoy Ian Poulter for his flair. When you're talking David Duval though - you have to admire...

Rooting for the Home Team

Like most people (I presume), I root exclusively for the home team.  So it was a no-brainer this past week to root for the good 'ol US of A in the President's Cup in Australia.  Hey it was us agin' them.  Plus, as an added bonus, I got to root against Greg Norman.  I...

The World Cup of Men’s Golf…It’s This Weekend!

A piece by Rob Bolton on Golf Digest's website caught my eye today. He gives his usual Power Rankings treatment to the two-man teams that dispute the World Cup this weekend on Hainan Island, China. What struck me was the quality of golfer on each of his top five...

PGA Tour Journey Ends For Katz…For Now

The quest for a 2012 PGA Tour card ended in Plantation, Florida, for Williamsville's Jake Katz. The two-time Buffalo District champion and NYSGA state runner-up was unable to recapture the magic of his first-round 67 over the final three rounds. Katz finished in a tie...

I Could Get Used To This Australia

Watching professional golf that occurs in Australia is quite conducive to my schedule. Two weeks in a row now I've been able to come home, workout and still tune into the thick of the competition. Thursday my friends and I went out to watch the NFL game and also kept...

Katz Digs A Hole With Second-Round 73

26 players,  more or less, will emerge from Plantation, Florida on Saturday with a stamped ticket for Q-School, Final Stage. Williamsville's Jake Katz made that notion a bit tougher today with an uneven round of 73. Three birdies were more than offset by three bogies...

Not Men’s, Not Women’s – Just Golf.

Here’s something worth noting – the members of England’s male and female amateur golf associations have agreed to merge into a single governing body. According to the organization, the move “will help us to grow the game and will be more appealing to commercial...
