Porter Cup 2019 Is Here!

Here is what you need to know as the world's best amateur golfers arrive at Niagara Falls country club.

1.  There will be a new champion. Thomas Walsh, the 2019 titleist, is now a professional, plying his trade on PGA Tour Canada.

2.  The tournament runs from Wednesday, July 24th to Saturday, July 27th. There is no 36-hole cut. The event is a 72-hole stroke play championship. Admission is free, parking fee is a donation to local scouting organizations.

3. The Empire state of New York is represented by Ryan Spady (Elmira), Ethan Ng (NYC), Alec Bard (Utica), Will Thomson (Rochester), Jon Pak (Westchester) and local stalwarts David Hanes (Elma) and Ben Reichert (East Amherst).

4. The 2014 (Scott Harvey) and 2018 (Kevin O’Connell) USGA Mid-Amateur champions are in the field. Perhaps the kids won’t run away with this one!

5. The international contingent is strong. Contestants in this year’s 60th playing hail from Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Argentina, Venezuela, Taiwan, Japan and, of course, Canada.

6. Garret Rank, NHL referee and 3rd-place finisher in the 2018 Canadian Amateur, will again tee it up at NFCC.

7. Local favs Ben Reichert (Florida Amateur in June) and David Hanes (Buffalo District match play, also in June) are riding a hot streak. Keep the cup in western New York!

8. Some of the top college programs (Alabama, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Kent State, Duke, Georgia, Illinois, and Virginia) have players competing in this year’s Porter Cup. Learn about all of them here.

9. Every bit of information you need is available on the Porter Cup website.

10. You can’t buy this shirt anymore. That’s rough. Unless…maybe they’ll have some at the pro shop. Who knows?

Sponsor Update: Arrowhead Golf Club Labor Day News

Arrowhead Golf Club As summer comes to a close, we want to thank everybody for another great season at the course.  Although we had to deal with a bit more rain than last year, we really had a sensational year for golf.  On Labor Day, we will debut our new fall rates:...

Bomb And Gouge: Same For Pros And Amateurs?

An inspiration for a golf story is one step removed from another's article. Brandel Chamblee went off on launch monitors and their detrimental effect on the game. Rich Hunt followed up with a contradictory piece on a site for which I write, golfwrx.com. A handful of...

Thoughts I Had That Slipped Away…

Every now and again, those thoughts that slipped away come back and pay a return visit. I write them down and share them with others, hoping that they help or inform. I've got a good half-dozen ideas here. Let me know if you've experienced these moments, if you agree...

Cape Cod Carousal: Highland Links golf links

The golf at Highland Links is links golf. I've played Bandon and St. Andrews, as well as a number of burned-out western New York courses through a hot summer. My game flexes easily from high-and-soft to low-and-running. Highland Links offers you the opportunity to...

Cape Cod Carousal: Captains Golf Club, Starboard Course

Maintaining a 36-hole facility must be challenging. Designing one, or expanding on an original cannot be much easier. The Captains golf courses in Brewster (near the northward bend of the cape) consists of the Starboard and Port eighteens. Brian Silva, a Massachusetts...

Cape Cod Carousal: Bass River golf course

I'm slowly becoming a sampler of classic golf courses. I write slowly because you need a certain pedigree to devour the entire buffet. If you're born to the manner, chances are you did play a number of the inaccessible greats by the time you turned twenty. When you...

Cape Cod Carousal: Whitinsville Golf Club

Technically, the Whitinsville golf club is not located on Cape Cod. It sits to the northwest, about two hours, but it was on the way from home, so it makes the list. Whitinsville is located in its eponymous town and is a scant nine holes at first blush. You can learn...

Feel Your Swing

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do! These days, many players are diligently working on speed drills to enable them to hit the ball longer, that's what most...

BuffaloGolfer Stories: 8-19-2013

The great summer of golf of 2013 is winding down. Courses are punching their greens, high school tryouts are nigh and the European team defeated the USA to win the Solheim Cup. If you haven't received your Buffalo Golfer Stories newsletter via email, you can check it...

The Obligatory Team-Golf, Match-Play Column

I write this column after Team USA, in its many forms, loses an international golf match. I've made notations after Ryder and Curtis and Walker cups in the past. On Sunday, August 18th, Team USA went down to a massive defeat (10-18) against the European team in the...
