Porter Cup 2019 Is Here!

Here is what you need to know as the world's best amateur golfers arrive at Niagara Falls country club.

1.  There will be a new champion. Thomas Walsh, the 2019 titleist, is now a professional, plying his trade on PGA Tour Canada.

2.  The tournament runs from Wednesday, July 24th to Saturday, July 27th. There is no 36-hole cut. The event is a 72-hole stroke play championship. Admission is free, parking fee is a donation to local scouting organizations.

3. The Empire state of New York is represented by Ryan Spady (Elmira), Ethan Ng (NYC), Alec Bard (Utica), Will Thomson (Rochester), Jon Pak (Westchester) and local stalwarts David Hanes (Elma) and Ben Reichert (East Amherst).

4. The 2014 (Scott Harvey) and 2018 (Kevin O’Connell) USGA Mid-Amateur champions are in the field. Perhaps the kids won’t run away with this one!

5. The international contingent is strong. Contestants in this year’s 60th playing hail from Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Argentina, Venezuela, Taiwan, Japan and, of course, Canada.

6. Garret Rank, NHL referee and 3rd-place finisher in the 2018 Canadian Amateur, will again tee it up at NFCC.

7. Local favs Ben Reichert (Florida Amateur in June) and David Hanes (Buffalo District match play, also in June) are riding a hot streak. Keep the cup in western New York!

8. Some of the top college programs (Alabama, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Kent State, Duke, Georgia, Illinois, and Virginia) have players competing in this year’s Porter Cup. Learn about all of them here.

9. Every bit of information you need is available on the Porter Cup website.

10. You can’t buy this shirt anymore. That’s rough. Unless…maybe they’ll have some at the pro shop. Who knows?

Run Up 2 The Cup: The Par Holes

In the first part of this mini-series, I examined the birdie holes. These are holes at NFCC where a seasoned competitor expects to be positioned to go under par. If you miss out, you feel like you missed out. The second installment looked at bogey holes. Even though...

Run Up 2 The Cup: The Bogey Holes

The first four holes at Niagara Falls country club are all manageable affairs. You can bogey any of them, but you shouldn't bogey a single one. Porter Cup contestants should reach the fifth tee at level par or better. That's where the fun begins. Bogey holes at...

Run Up 2 The Cup: The Birdie Holes @ Niagara Falls

Every course has them. They are the holes where golfers hope to make up shots lost elsewhere. Some of the ones at Niagara Falls, in the hands of the best the Porter Cup has to offer, might even be called eagle holes. We'll stick with birdie holes and we'll find you at...

WNYPLGA Class A & B Individual Results

Jonathan Snyder posted rounds of 76 and 73 to escape Sheridan Park with a two-stroke win over Kris Boyes in the A bracket. First round leader Glenn Gast was forced to withdraw. Tim Dean's second-round 83 was enough for a one-shot win over Rich Balsano, who fired the...

Mickelson’s Sunday a Reminder of Muirfield’s Greatness

When reviewing a list of Open champions at Muirfield, one common theme emerges. Greatness. Nicklaus has won at Muirfield, Watson, Player, Trevino, Faldo - all the way back to Walter Hagen and Harry Vardon. So when the leader board heading into Sunday's final round of...

The British Open: What I Like About Brown

That old Romantics song from the 80s plays in my head as I type What I Like About Brown as my title for this piece. So many US golfers have been raised on the notion that green is the color of golf, that a week observing the browns of Muirfield, site of this year's...

Caddying in Triple-A Golf: Part 4

This is the last installment in my series about caddying on the Web.com Tour last August, for Kevin Johnson in the Price Cutter Charity Championship in Springfield, MO. This installment features the second round of tournament play. Johnson shot 3-under in round one,...

Run Up 2 The Cup: Ins And Outs of the Porter Cup

If you suspect that this installment has anything to do with the nuances and secrets of the Niagara Falls country club course and its featured event, you've been misled. The ins and outs of the Porter Cup has to do with the players that are suddenly in the event, and...
