Porter Cup Media Day Came And Went

A lot of information was shared, and the golf course was opened for a test drive.

We learned a few things on Tuesday the 16th, at the Niagara Falls Country Club. A week from today, 90 of the world’s best amateur golfers will begin competition in the 60th playing of the Porter Cup. What will they face? Who are they? Here is what we know.

~The #7 golfer in the world, Chun An Yu, and the #22 ranked golfer, John Pak, will compete in this year’s tournament;

~Four of the continent’s top mid-amateur golfers will compete. They are: Kevin O’Connell, the 2018 USGA Mid-Amateur champion; Matt Parziale, the 2017 Mid-Am champion; Garrett Rank; and Justin Tereshko;

~The golf course is in the midst of a greens revitalization and renewal. Many of the putting surfaces have been recontoured to add additional undulation, while still offering new hole locations. All 18 will eventually undergo this treatment;

~On the junior side, one of the top commits from the class of 2020, Canon Claycomb of Orlando, will compete. Claycomb will attend the University of Alabama. He has represented the USA on both the Junior Ryder Cup and Junior Presidents Cup teams;

~The golf course will likely offer a lot of putts at birdie, as long as golfers can keep their tee balls in the fairway. Rain is forecast for 3 or 4 of the next 10 days. The remaining days will be overcast, ensuring that the course does not “drought-out.” Unless the tees are waaaaay back on 5, 8, 9, 13 and 17, expect less-than-drive on many of the par-four holes;

~All of the golfers will have four attempts at replicating Tiger Woods’ 12th-hole ace in 1994. If they come as close as this guy, they’ll make birdie more often than not.

2012 – Seeing The Subtle Things

You can learn a lot about yourself from a tree you didn't event notice. It happened to me this past summer when I was golfing with Mo Golf and Scrambler during our Bethpage Binge in July. We stood atop a Par 3 tee deck somewhere in the beautiful golf abyss that is...

To Which Male Do The Gods Of Golf Still Owe A Major?

One of my favorite go-rounds with the Scrambler begins with the 2009 British Open championship. The ridiculous putt from Cink, the huge bounce on Watson's approach to #72, the miserable par attempt, the rest...stuff for weeping. Then, the magic of one week from July...

Rankmark Versus MyGolfSpy, Head To Head

The interim between a religious holiday and a secular one brought two challenges, two head-to-head scenarios to my attention. Rankmark offered its 2011 hybrid club test results, just in time to spend your post-holiday bankroll, while MyGolfSpy put across something...

Holiday Valley Resort Golf Course Review

Now that the New-Build bubble has burst, golf course architecture is focused on restoration and renovation. In the case of Holiday Valley, the work done by Paul Albanese can be classified as the later. In its initial iteration, HV was a nice resort course with some...

Top Players To Watch 2012

PGATour.com has released its list of Top 100 players to watch in 2012. The list won't be official until the #1 player on the list is revealed tomorrow, but I've got a strong feeling Luke Donald has the spot locked down. I took a look at the list and have some issues...

Golf “Things” That Earn My Gratitude

As I reflect on 2011's golfdom, I have no idea the number that will precede the word "Golf" in the title of this post. It might be 10, or 5, or hopefully plural. My persona finds it impossible to not spend the last days of a year in purposeful reflection. Hope is, it...

Crag Burn Golf Club Review

Many folks in the know have a problem with Robert Trent Jones, Senior. His golf courses, they say, are too punitive, too penal. He is in love with the carry over water, they say. The reality is, he came of age after the ground-loving, ground-hugging, golden-age...

River Oaks Golf Club Review

River Oaks Golf Club, designed by the late and mad Scotsman, Desmond Muirhead, is quite unique among private clubs in western New York. Opened in 1972, the course hosted LPGA events its first two years of existence, then later served as course for informal Pro-Am...

Kindness Will Always Matter

Honestly, I’ve never paid much attention to Rod Pampling. Guy’s a great player who puts his name on the front page of a leader board from time to time. He has his good days, his bad days and the occasional great one. He’s a player you recognize but rarely seek out if...

My Movement Toward Golf Fitness: Installment IV

There is certainly something about the holidays that works against fitness. Marie and I had to postpone our 12/24 session until 12/27, and I had even less time than normal for exercise during the run-up to the Christmas celebrations. Given all that, you'd think that...

Meeting Moe Norman

It was at the 2004 Canadian Women's Open at The Legends on the Niagara that I had a very brief encounter with the legendary Moe Norman.  For those of you who are not familiar with Moe, he was one of the most accomplished Canadian golfers of all time and surely the...
