It’s been a while and for that I apologize. We were briskly counting down the most dominant performances of the past 13 majors and then I got caught up in life. I’d feel bad, but these top four are worth the wait. So, let’s get started…
#4 – Phil Mickelson – 2010 Masters
For some reason, dominance and drama tend to travel together. That’s the definition of the 2010 Masters Tournament which Phil Mickelson won with a blistering -16 to earn his third green jacket.
There are two lasting images from this championship that are burned into people’s memories. The first is the image of Phil hugging his wife Amy Mickelson (who had recently been diagnosed with cancer) just moments after securing the victory. Their ball of a hug represented the love, loyalty and humanity that we’ve come to admire in Phil. The second image is that of Mickelson choosing to risk it all with a dangerous shot out of the pine straw on the back 9. There’s no point in calling the success rate of the shot Phil anything less than next to impossible. Still, Mickelson launched the shot to about 8 feet and catapulted himself to victory.
Mickelson is beloved because of his near misses and seemingly humble manner. Still, it’s days like Sunday at Augusta in 2010 when Phil reminds us just how mind-shatteringly talented he can be. When everything works, Mickelson is more than dominant. He’s legendary.
