Onward we trek through the greatest golfing performances of the last three years. I’ve said since the get go that I have a solid idea of the final three, but there’s a number of different ways to get there when ranking the last 13 major championship winners and their performances. We’re getting down there (this is #6) and I can confirm that when you look back at these events – you struggle to see why anybody has any issues with parity
Here’s the sixth most dominant and impressive performance from the past 13 major championships…..
#7 – Martin Kaymer – Whistling Straits – 2010 PGA Championship
People may always remember the 2010 PGA Championship for Dustin Johnson and the was he/wasn’t he in the bunker ruling that came on 18, but they shouldn’t. Instead, let’s acknowledge this tournament for the pure shootout it turned into. This was theater at its absolute best and anyone who watched should feel lucky to have been tuned in to the show.
Let’s remember that coming into Sunday’s round the top of the leader board read with such names as Nick Watney, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Martin Kaymer. That’s probably a perfect cast of characters for the next PGA Tour “We Got Next” commercial. Golf’s young and bright future was on full display at this major championship.
Sunday was epic as well. Another youngster, Bubba Watson bombed his driver all over Whistling Straits en route to a 68. Kaymer played steady golf and shot two-under. McIlroy kept it at level par for the day – which is good but not good enough on Sunday at a PGA Championship. Dustin Johnson birdied 16 and 17 to give himself a chance on 18 before the mysterious bunker (or was it ?) gobbled his ball.
72 holes wasn’t enough for this battle and Kaymer and Watson headed out for a three-hole duel to decide it. Maybe Johnson should have been in it, maybe not. But you can’t diminish Kaymer’s victory. One of the best young leader boards we’ve seen eventually gave way to just one. Kaymer emerged standing with trophy in hand. It’s arguably the most well-earned title of the 13.
