The Women’s Porter Cup celebrates its 4th birthday on June 8th. The fledgling event has grown in the three years since its debut, and now counts some of the top amateurs in the field. According to tournament chair Brian Oakley, “We’re excited that in just our 4th year we have grown the field to 84 players and expanded to eight countries.” Practice rounds begin on the 7th.

Although 2015 champion Ana Paula Valdes will not return to defend her title, the field returns five of the top nine finishers from last year. Josee Doyon of Quebec, the 3rd place finisher a year ago, is back to take another run at the trophy. On her heels will be Jessica Porvasnik of Ohio (4th a year ago), and Maren Cipolla of Lewiston, Princess Superal (Phillipines) and Naomi Ko (British Columbia), all tied for 7th in 2015.

Two first-timers in the field are Maddie Szeryk (Texas A&M), the 31st-ranked player in the world, and Tayler Totland (Furman), number 59 in the official rankings. Both should make a run at the top spot, if they have the patience to navigate the two unique nines of the Niagara Falls country club. If the tournament were not up against the Curtis Cup, being played June 10-12 in Ireland, more of the world’s top female amateurs would be in Lewiston.

In addition to Cipolla, a recent graduate of Nichols School, the local contingent is quite strong. Recent UMichigan graduate Catherine Peters returns for her 4th Porter Cup. Joining her from western New York are Katherine Creighton, Chelsea Dantonio, Sarah Godfrey-Singleton, Victoria Parker, Marah Penn, Sydney Shaw, Sarah Riso and Julie Murphy. Murph, a mid-amateur, will be joined by fellow veteran golfers Tara Joy Connelly and Meghan Stasi.

Beyond Canada, the Phillipines and the USA, the following countries will be represented: Norway (Susana Vik), Venezuela (Gabriela Coello), Thailand (Wad Phaewchimplee), Finland (Anne Hakula) and Brasil (Clara Teixeira.)
