Jordan Spieth Plays Nelson and Graduates High School Today.

Jordan Spieth could have quite the day to remember today. Spieth, just 17 years old, made the cut as an amateur at last year’s Byron Nelson and he did it again this year. Today, Spieth is set to graduate from high school following his third round. “Right after the round… I’m going to shoot over there as quickly as possible,” Spieth said of graduation. “I don’t know how long it usually lasts.” Through nine holes of his third round, Spieth is T13 and two-under. A few more birdies and he’ll be graduating tonight and starting in the top 10 tomorrow morning. Share this:TwitterFacebookGoogleTumblrLinkedInPinterestLike this:Like...

Need A Rooting Interest This Week?

Of all the players in all the tournaments on all the tours this weekend, perhaps nobody needs your cheering and support more than Ken Green. Green will tee it up in this weekend’s Senior PGA Championship at Valhalla. If you’ve heard of Green before it’s because of the tragedy that has been the last few years of his life. Green lost his girlfriend and brother when his RV blew a tire and went out of control down an embankment, ramming into an oak tree. Green survived but lost part of his right leg and now wears a prosthetic. That’s enough horror and pain for any life but Green learned a year later that his 21-year-old son had died after digesting a lethal combination of alcohol and drugs. Through all of it, Green has kept his dream of playing and succeeding at professional golf. He wants to prove that he can still play, despite the prosthetic leg, the pain he carries and the nightmares he must endure. He believes if he plays well he can inspire others who’ve lost limbs and/or battled depression. “I can’t tell you how bad I want to play one good tournament and what I mean by that is if I were to finish in the top 20 in any Champions Tour Event,” he told reporters. “I could walk away and smile.” Root for Ken Green...

Two Quick Golf Thoughts For A Tuesday

1) Tiger Woods took questions about the AT&T National event scheduled for later this summer and revealed that he’s now on crutches and wearing a protective boot in hopes of being healthy for the 2011 U.S. Open. I can’t stand the thought of Woods’ injured, mamed and weak. I honestly don’t care if he ever wins a major again – I miss the fighter that Woods used to be more than anything. That’s not to suggest that he should risk his health to be out playing golf… but don’t you remember how it used to be? 2) This week on Tour is one of my favorites with the HP Byron Nelson. If you remember last year – Jordan Spieth (16 years of age and in high school at the time) shot up the leaderboard and contended until the back nine on Sunday. Spieth is back this year and a year older. It would be wonderful to see him make a similar charge. Richard Durrett has put together an excellent post on Spieth that you should read. It would be superb if he were in the Porter Cup field this summer. Share this:TwitterFacebookGoogleTumblrLinkedInPinterestLike this:Like...

WNY PGA Seneca Allegany Pro-Am @ Elkdale

The WNYPGA held the 2011 Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel Pro Am today Monday, May 23rd at Elkdale CC in Salamanca, NY.  The event was a 10 AM shotgun and play was suspended for about an hour from noon to one for heavy rain and puddling on the greens. The rain did not stop the low scores from coming in as five scores came in at par or better.  Eddie Suchora from Park CC, came in with a five under 65 to take 1st place in the individual professional event. Dwayne Randall and Mike Kiel also posted rounds in the 60’s with a 66 and a 69 respectively.  The Pro Am Team Event was a best 2 ball of 5.  The winning team posted a score of 123 and included the likes of Professionals Ryan Swanson and Troy Moss accompanied by the three amateurs Mel Swanson, Dennis Scotty and Scott Pritchard.  Thanks to the host Professional Jack Widger of Elkdale CC and our sponsors of the Seneca Allegany Casino for a wonderful tournament.
