Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Celebrates 25 Years

Dr. David Bronner, the CEO of Retirement Systems of Alabama had a dream to invest his organization’s pension funds and build 26 world-class golf courses that would challenge people enough that “they will want to come back and try again.” Bronner had the creativity and courage to do what no one could imagine. Once he lured the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr. out of semi-retirement, there was no looking back. With Jones on his team, the result is an extraordinary golf trail that meanders across Alabama, from the Appalachians in the north all the way to the Gulf of...

Casa de Campo: Welcome to La Vida Buena

Welcome to La Vida Buena – The Good Life – Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic by Dave Finn This weekend spring was in the air, but so was snow. I glanced at my clubs, sitting forlornly in the corner of my office, all polished up, with no place to go.  I closed my eyes, and suddenly I could feel the salty breezes and hear the waves crashing against the rocky, ironstone shores. This was not a dream but an unforgettable memory, as I conjured up my first impressions of Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. Unfortunately, some of the...

Golf like Ohana in Magical Maui

by Dave and Jane Finn Maui, Hawaii – It’s only late December and already we are tired of winter so picture this…It’s just before dawn and the sky above the Au ‘aa Channel that runs between Maui, Lana’i and Molokai is tinged with pink as the sun kisses the top of the West Maui Mountains.  You’re savouring the last sip of a perfectly brewed Royal Kona coffee before heading out to play your first round at one of Ka’anapali’s two resort courses when out of the corner...

Autumn Magic: Chez Montebello, Québec

By Jane and Dave Finn Montebello Quebec – It’s the first week in October, my favourite time of year. The days are still warm and sunny but there’s a bit of a nip in the air at night. The leaves are turning and the trees that line the road to Montebello are a riot of colour; brilliant orange, burning yellow and blazing red. Breathtaking to say the least but even Mother Nature has some competition in this neck of the woods. The World’s Largest Log Resort Venerable is the word that comes to mind as we drive through the...

Take Me Home, West Virginia

West Virginia – Some of you may not be old enough to remember the #2 hit on the U.S. Billboard from 1971, “Take Me Home, Country Roads”.  This John Denver song kept resonating in my head throughout my last visit to West Virginia. Country roads, take me home To the place I belong West Virginia, mountain momma Take me home, country roads   His song certainly reflects the attitude of the 1.85 million residents who call this state home.  In fact, on March 7th of this year, the West Virginia Legislature approved a resolution to make it the official state song.  I was truly amazed by the number of people that I met who had left to learn their trade elsewhere but have come back home with outstanding credentials.  All of them seem to be well grounded, humble, with a passion and pride for their home state.  True Mountaineer fans and I can see why.  The natural beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, the small town atmosphere and friendly people with a more laid-back lifestyle, make it very conducive to family life and visitors alike. West Virginia is also an outdoor adventure oasis. There is world renowned white-water rafting, bungee jumping, zip lining, fishing, hunting and some of the best mountain golf you will find anywhere. Our state tour began with less than a 4 ½ hour drive southeast from...
