First Round Tee Times: Top 7 Groups To Follow
Our experts have combed the tee sheet, and these are the 7 groups you should follow. The Porter Cup tees off at 7:30 am on Wednesday the 24th. 1st and 2nd round groups are the same, then players will be reassigned, based on score. Early groups on Wednesday go off later on Thursday, and vice-versa. 2nd round tee times are either 2.5 hours later or earlier, depending on 1st round position. We’ve determined that the following groups are the critical ones to see on Wednesday and Thursday. By trophy time on Saturday, the winner will have emerged from one of these groups. You’ll be able to brag that you followed the champion before anyone else knew the story. Here goes!
1. 11:10/8:40 Kevin O’Connell, the current USGA Mid-Amateur champion, tees off with Noah Norton (Georgia Tech) and Josh Whalen (Kent State.) O’Connell is the most likely mid-am to challenge for the title.
2. 11:20/8:50 Includes Matt Parziale (2017 US Mid-Am champ), Garrett Rank, and Tyler Strafaci. 2 are out of college, while Strafaci is a senior at Georgia Tech. He and Parziale hope to catch the eye of Nathaniel Crosby, USA Walker Cup captain, who will be on site Friday and Saturday. Strafaci finished 5th last week at the Players Amateur.
3. 11:00/8:30 The top two golfers by WAGR Ranking are in this game. Chun An Yu (#7) and John Pak (#22) will tee off with Scott Harvey (2014 US Mid-Am champion.) On paper, the strongest grouping.
4. 9:00/11:30 Local favorite #1, Ben Reichert of East Amherst, competes with Koichiro Ishika (Arizona State) and John Catanzaro (Georgia).
5. 8:00/10:30 Local favorite #2, David Hanes of Elma, matches up with John Felitto (Notre Dame) and Sudarshan Yellamaraju (Canadian Junior Team).
6. 8:20/10:50 Matthew Riedel, an incoming freshman at Vanderbilt, goes off with Blake Dyer (Florida) and Bradley Reeves (Arizona.)
7. 11:30/9:00 James Piot (Michigan State) had a top-25 finish last week at the Players Amateur. He pegs it with Herbie Aikens and Adrian Norford, possibly the first golfer from St. Kitts to compete in the Porter Cup.
A Fool For a Caddy
It's entirely possible that Steve Williams never knew of Tiger Woods' philandering ways earlier in his career. It's plausible that Williams got more than a raw deal from Woods. Maybe Tiger did Steve the courtesy of sitting down and telling him it was over... maybe he...
The Weekender: Post Halloween Blues
I've always liked week-long celebrations, despite never making it to Mardi Gras or Carnaval. It seems a gyp that Halloween is a one-nighter. I don't worship evil, mind you, but I love lighting the pumpkins up at watching them glow each evening. Don't want to go broke...
Stolen Holes: A Series
Part Two: Dirty Golf Unbelievably, I snuck out for more golf on Thursday, again while the monkeys were off dancing. After, I went across the street to have my Two-Ball extended into a belly putter, but that's another tale (yet unwritten) for another time. You know the...
Sergio Is Back – At Least That’s What I Hear
I did good. Heck, for me, I did phenomenal by keeping my mouth shot and not talking about how great Sergio Garcia has been playing as of late. If you haven't been following, Garcia has won the last two event he's played in. He won the Castello Masters by 11 strokes...
Stolen Holes: A Series
Part One: The Seven Stages of Fall Muni Golf Given the fortune of working near Colvin & Amherst, knowing that child # 4 would be at play rehearsal until 8 pm, I dropped # 3 off at dance and shot back to work this afternoon. Not to do additional work, mind you, but...

Will it be China, Ireland or Spain? Perhaps South Africa, England or the colonies, errr, USA. Or will some unheralded nation take the prize? Click Continue Reading to see our poll on the upcoming World Cup...[poll id="20"]
RecycleView-Recycled Interview with Brady Riggs
This interview first appeared in September of 2010 (about a year ago) and is a deserved first installment of RecycleView. We've read Brady Riggs in GolfTips Magazine for years and dig his look almost as much as we respect his teaching. Read on and play on!...
Presidents Cup Still Ahead.
The only real professional golf tournament on my radar in the next month is the highly-anticipated Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia. It's the stepsister to the Ryder Cup, but it packs as much talent and potential excitement as any other team...
Halloween Resolution: The Weekender
I've never been much of a conformist, having been raised in those liberal 70s. New Year's Resolutions aren't for me; the line is so crowded that I can hardly see my way to the "Top Of The Line" resolution stands. I prefer Halloween, the holiday that falls less than a...
Twitter plus Golf Channel equals… (you be the judge this weekend!)
Operation Don’t Suck – A Look Back
They say snow may come our way tomorrow and for all but the truest of true die hard golfers, that translates to the end of a season. This season was like any other for me as I actually "tried" to get better. By that, I mean I took some lessons, read some books and put...
