First Round Tee Times: Top 7 Groups To Follow
Our experts have combed the tee sheet, and these are the 7 groups you should follow. The Porter Cup tees off at 7:30 am on Wednesday the 24th. 1st and 2nd round groups are the same, then players will be reassigned, based on score. Early groups on Wednesday go off later on Thursday, and vice-versa. 2nd round tee times are either 2.5 hours later or earlier, depending on 1st round position. We’ve determined that the following groups are the critical ones to see on Wednesday and Thursday. By trophy time on Saturday, the winner will have emerged from one of these groups. You’ll be able to brag that you followed the champion before anyone else knew the story. Here goes!
1. 11:10/8:40 Kevin O’Connell, the current USGA Mid-Amateur champion, tees off with Noah Norton (Georgia Tech) and Josh Whalen (Kent State.) O’Connell is the most likely mid-am to challenge for the title.
2. 11:20/8:50 Includes Matt Parziale (2017 US Mid-Am champ), Garrett Rank, and Tyler Strafaci. 2 are out of college, while Strafaci is a senior at Georgia Tech. He and Parziale hope to catch the eye of Nathaniel Crosby, USA Walker Cup captain, who will be on site Friday and Saturday. Strafaci finished 5th last week at the Players Amateur.
3. 11:00/8:30 The top two golfers by WAGR Ranking are in this game. Chun An Yu (#7) and John Pak (#22) will tee off with Scott Harvey (2014 US Mid-Am champion.) On paper, the strongest grouping.
4. 9:00/11:30 Local favorite #1, Ben Reichert of East Amherst, competes with Koichiro Ishika (Arizona State) and John Catanzaro (Georgia).
5. 8:00/10:30 Local favorite #2, David Hanes of Elma, matches up with John Felitto (Notre Dame) and Sudarshan Yellamaraju (Canadian Junior Team).
6. 8:20/10:50 Matthew Riedel, an incoming freshman at Vanderbilt, goes off with Blake Dyer (Florida) and Bradley Reeves (Arizona.)
7. 11:30/9:00 James Piot (Michigan State) had a top-25 finish last week at the Players Amateur. He pegs it with Herbie Aikens and Adrian Norford, possibly the first golfer from St. Kitts to compete in the Porter Cup.

The wondrous Walker Cup took place last weekend at National Golf Links of America. It's great viewing but only comes around (like the Olympics) once every four years, unless you travel to Europe. The next go-round will be in 2017, at Los Angeles Country Club's North...
Cover The Fight Or Cover The Progress?
This entry strays a bit from the normal it's obviously about golf tack of this writer's routes. I receive a blog from Seth Godin on a daily basis and enjoy it for its quick-hit consistency. To his credit, Godin always makes me think. In a recent toss, he put down...
New Reasons to Play & Stay in Myrtle Beach & Grand Strand, SC
If you are a serious golfer, you have to tick Myrtle Beach off your list of “have to play before I die” destinations. A number of years ago I had the distinct pleasure and privilege of having lunch with Mr. Clay Brittain Jr. at his Sea Captain’s House Restaurant. Mr....
Patty Jordan Golf-Marathons To Fight Cystic Fibrosis
In two days, Patty Jordan will play 100 holes of golf at Westwood Country Club to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis. That's a lot of golf in one day, walking or riding. I know, as I've done it. She picked a great time of year to marathon; cool weather ensures that you...

You call this fair?
By now, quite a few fans of televised golf are aware that Tiger Woods was penalized two strokes after his 2nd round at the BMW Championship. While television cameras were zooming in on his ball, Tiger removed some loose impediment near the ball. Clearly the ball moved...
Walker Cup Report: And Away…
Since this isn't my truest bread-winner, I've been able to preserve the romance of reporting on golf tournaments. I've never been in town for the entirety of a single event and I look forward to the arrival and regret the departure. Since I learned that the 2013...
Walker Cup Report: Team USA Fights Back Individually
After being down by a point going into the afternoon singles, Team USA found itself in an uncomfortably-familiar situation. It needed a turning point in its favor and it arrived in the guise of two well-rested players. Max Homa and Michael Kim, teammates at the...
Walker Cup Report: So You Say You Can Drive The First Green…
There was a time when they moved the tees up twenty yards and cut the hole on the front of the green. Don't lay back, echoed the voice, give that ball a ride and take a run at eagle. That time was Saturday afternoon, when no voice of reason accompanied any of the 16...
Walker Cup Report: Saturday Foursomes
I made certain to gently correct the first person who commented knowingly, they're playing better-ball in the morning. Not better-ball, I acknowledged, nor butter beer. It's called foursomes or alternate shot. Gratitude extended and accepted. For a while in the...
