Porter Cup 2019: Day 3 Debriefing
Chun An Yu gives a bit of hope to the fieldChun An Yu continued to show himself as the class of the 2019 Porter Cup field. He posted his third round in the 60s, and separated himself from the field. After 38 consecutive holes without a bogey, the Taiwanese golfer from Arizona State made four at the lat, dropping back to -12 and giving the field the slightest bit of hope. On his heels is Aiden Didone from Melbourne, Australia. Didone posted the day’s low round, 65, to jump to -9 and a final-round tee time with Chun and Tyler Strafaci, of Florida and Georgia Tech.
The leader began the day in a tie with Reid Davenport of Texas and Vanderbilt. Davenport had posted 3 bogies through his first 36 holes, but stumbled to 4 on Friday. He countered with 3 birdies, to remain within shouting distance of the leader. Davenport will anchor the penultimate threesome, with Davis Lamb and Matt Parziale. Lamb posted his 3rd 68 of the tournament, and remains our selection for most likely to go low. If he does so on Saturday, he will wear the winner’s green jacket at dusk. Parziale turned in a clean card of 5 birdies and 0 bogies, matching Didone for day’s low round. The Massachusetts fireman is no stranger to match-play triumph on the national level, but a stroke-play title would elevate him to serious consideration for this year’s USA Walker Cup side.
Realistically, Chun An Yu should turn in another score in the 60s. If he posts one-under on Saturday, he will reach -13 for the week. That would require a mid- to low-60s number from any of his chasers. By our calculations, seven golfers (Didone, Strafaci, Davenport, Lamb, Parziale, James Piot and John Pak) have a chance at catching the leader. For the -4 and -3 golfers, a course record-matching round of 60 would be needed to enter the fray.
While we prepare for round four (Tee Sheet Here)and contemplate the myriad possible outcomes, have a look at a series of videos posted by @OPGolfCoach on Twitter. Stationed at the desirable confluence of holes 15, 16 and 17, Nate Leary whipped out his phone and rolled tape.

My Movement Toward Golf Fitness
I'd never heard it pitched that way before: "I want to see how you move." How I move boxes? On the dance floor? "No, how you move. It will help you become a better, fitter golfer." Her name is Marie Achkar and she is a TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) certified...
Stolen Holes: A Series
Par 3 includes two rounds at Byrncliff, down and out (but not down and out) in Varysburg, east of Wales Center on 20A. The first round was the one where you say "All right! Got this game figured out..." while the second was "Is this Hurling?" Byrncliff is nearly a...
RecycleView-Interview With Tom Doak
This interview with Tom Doak, once the enfant terrible of golf course architecture in the eyes of some, now an elder statesman, ran in April of 2010. The new golf course building industry in the USA has taken a major hit, virtually at a standstill. Architects find...
Things I Know I Think…
*I know that this game is challenging. It's even more challenging when you don't have time to practice. Since the high school season ended, I've been out each weekend for 18 holes and have found success and failure in different ways and in different aspects of my game...
“What the heck was that?”
That was the response of my friend as he and I watched my first tee shot of the year clip a tree branch and bounce into the fairway of the hole running parallel to the hole I was playing. I pulled the brim of my hat a little lower and watched the ball bounce and...
Kicking The Young Out Of The Nest-The Travis Society Site Move On
To the best of my recollection (no documentation was found in the archives), we met at Don Pablo's (no longer there) on Niagara Falls Boulevard in 1999 or 2000. The internet was a wilderness and BuffaloGolfer was a fledgling .0rg called BuffGolf. Three folks from...
A Fool For a Caddy
It's entirely possible that Steve Williams never knew of Tiger Woods' philandering ways earlier in his career. It's plausible that Williams got more than a raw deal from Woods. Maybe Tiger did Steve the courtesy of sitting down and telling him it was over... maybe he...
The Weekender: Post Halloween Blues
I've always liked week-long celebrations, despite never making it to Mardi Gras or Carnaval. It seems a gyp that Halloween is a one-nighter. I don't worship evil, mind you, but I love lighting the pumpkins up at watching them glow each evening. Don't want to go broke...
Stolen Holes: A Series
Part Two: Dirty Golf Unbelievably, I snuck out for more golf on Thursday, again while the monkeys were off dancing. After, I went across the street to have my Two-Ball extended into a belly putter, but that's another tale (yet unwritten) for another time. You know the...
Sergio Is Back – At Least That’s What I Hear
I did good. Heck, for me, I did phenomenal by keeping my mouth shot and not talking about how great Sergio Garcia has been playing as of late. If you haven't been following, Garcia has won the last two event he's played in. He won the Castello Masters by 11 strokes...
