Porter Cup 2019 Is Here!

Here is what you need to know as the world's best amateur golfers arrive at Niagara Falls country club.

1.  There will be a new champion. Thomas Walsh, the 2019 titleist, is now a professional, plying his trade on PGA Tour Canada.

2.  The tournament runs from Wednesday, July 24th to Saturday, July 27th. There is no 36-hole cut. The event is a 72-hole stroke play championship. Admission is free, parking fee is a donation to local scouting organizations.

3. The Empire state of New York is represented by Ryan Spady (Elmira), Ethan Ng (NYC), Alec Bard (Utica), Will Thomson (Rochester), Jon Pak (Westchester) and local stalwarts David Hanes (Elma) and Ben Reichert (East Amherst).

4. The 2014 (Scott Harvey) and 2018 (Kevin O’Connell) USGA Mid-Amateur champions are in the field. Perhaps the kids won’t run away with this one!

5. The international contingent is strong. Contestants in this year’s 60th playing hail from Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Argentina, Venezuela, Taiwan, Japan and, of course, Canada.

6. Garret Rank, NHL referee and 3rd-place finisher in the 2018 Canadian Amateur, will again tee it up at NFCC.

7. Local favs Ben Reichert (Florida Amateur in June) and David Hanes (Buffalo District match play, also in June) are riding a hot streak. Keep the cup in western New York!

8. Some of the top college programs (Alabama, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Kent State, Duke, Georgia, Illinois, and Virginia) have players competing in this year’s Porter Cup. Learn about all of them here.

9. Every bit of information you need is available on the Porter Cup website.

10. You can’t buy this shirt anymore. That’s rough. Unless…maybe they’ll have some at the pro shop. Who knows?

Weird Equipment Failure

Earlier this season, I was out for my first hickory round with The Scrambler, using a borrowed set of clubs. On the second or third hole, I went down after a 4-iron, or mashie, if you prefer. I must have supponated my wrist and...

Apparel Update: Fila Tahoe Long Sleeve

Mornings and evenings in summer, or any time during spring or fall, are perfect occasions for a long-sleeved golf shirt. The proper and appropriate question is, which type? Traditional predominantly-cotton shirts have given way to blended tops that breathe, keeping...

Rocky Mountain High! Kamloops, BC Canada

When I say high I mean 4,000 feet above sea level high and still climbing!   Perched atop a downhill 145 yard par 3 at Sun Peaks with a daunting wooded river valley below and panoramic views of an alpine wonderland in the background my playing partner Wayne commented...

WNY PGA Pee Wee Tour: Wild Wood Results

The WNYPGA began a new Pee Wee Tour today at Wild Wood CC, Rush, NY that included kids ages 5-9 who played both 3-holes and 5-holes.  Each kid had an official caddie daddy walking alongside carrying their clubs and helping them as they played the wonderful game of...

Apparel Update: Nike Lunar Ascend

I've written in other posts about the expanding pathway toward comfortable, sneakerish golf shoes. Golf is a battle against the self and the elements; why should its combatants be stuck wearing uncomfortable wingtips that remind us of uncomfortable places? I'm all for...

Sponsor Update: 2012 Arrowhead Open

Arrowhead Golf Club in Akron, NY will host the 2012 Arrowhead Open, a scramble event, on Saturday, August 25th. The event will feature a four-person scramble, dinner and golf contests like closest to the pin, long drive and skins. For more information and...

Apparel Update: Linksoul

I'm a bit wary when a dude or a lass, having made a killing in apparel in another lifetime and style-era, makes an eerie comeback. Touting a new, fashion-younger direction, the results can be forgettable, even disastrous. Apparently, John Ashworth didn't tack this...

WNY Public Links Association Crowns Two Champions

Colin Burns and Norm Nieminen emerged from clusters of competitors to claim their respective divisions in the 2012 WNYPLGA individual championships. Burns posted rounds of 72 & 76 at Sheridan Park to notch a three-stroke victory in the A Bracket over runners-up...

Poconos Ramble (5 Rounds Posted)

The Poconos region follows the trace of the Delaware River from north to south, until the river continues south near Stroudsburg. The region itself heads southwest toward Jim Thorpe, Pennsvlvania. By the time you reach I-81 to the west, you've left the region. 2012...

Apparel Update: Nike Lunar Swingtip

As I watched third-round coverage of the British Open, I marveled not at the diversity of swing types nor the field, but most of all, at the shoes the competitors wore. Despite golf's traditional look of a wingtip golf shoe, fashion trends move toward a rounded,...
