Porter Cup 2019 Is Here!

Here is what you need to know as the world's best amateur golfers arrive at Niagara Falls country club.

1.  There will be a new champion. Thomas Walsh, the 2019 titleist, is now a professional, plying his trade on PGA Tour Canada.

2.  The tournament runs from Wednesday, July 24th to Saturday, July 27th. There is no 36-hole cut. The event is a 72-hole stroke play championship. Admission is free, parking fee is a donation to local scouting organizations.

3. The Empire state of New York is represented by Ryan Spady (Elmira), Ethan Ng (NYC), Alec Bard (Utica), Will Thomson (Rochester), Jon Pak (Westchester) and local stalwarts David Hanes (Elma) and Ben Reichert (East Amherst).

4. The 2014 (Scott Harvey) and 2018 (Kevin O’Connell) USGA Mid-Amateur champions are in the field. Perhaps the kids won’t run away with this one!

5. The international contingent is strong. Contestants in this year’s 60th playing hail from Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Argentina, Venezuela, Taiwan, Japan and, of course, Canada.

6. Garret Rank, NHL referee and 3rd-place finisher in the 2018 Canadian Amateur, will again tee it up at NFCC.

7. Local favs Ben Reichert (Florida Amateur in June) and David Hanes (Buffalo District match play, also in June) are riding a hot streak. Keep the cup in western New York!

8. Some of the top college programs (Alabama, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Kent State, Duke, Georgia, Illinois, and Virginia) have players competing in this year’s Porter Cup. Learn about all of them here.

9. Every bit of information you need is available on the Porter Cup website.

10. You can’t buy this shirt anymore. That’s rough. Unless…maybe they’ll have some at the pro shop. Who knows?

Trying to Establish Dominance – #6

Onward we trek through the greatest golfing performances of the last three years. I’ve said since the get go that I have a solid idea of the final three, but there’s a number of different ways to get there when ranking the last 13 major championship winners and their...

Walker Cup Recap: Out And In

On paper, the United States was the better team. Having five out of the top six players in the R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking, it seemed like it wasn’t even going to be a competition. But the Great Britain & Ireland team had other thoughts. They pulled off the...

Trying To Establish Dominance #7

I have always been partial to the U.S. Open. I believe it to be the greatest golf tournament on the planet. I love when the USGA sets up gruelingly long courses with sinewy, Usain Bolt fast greens. You’ll never hear me complain about a guy winning the tournament with...

A Decade Later

It was a day later, in an empty golf cart barn where I cried. I’ll never forget that. After two days of being glued to the television watching images of towers falling in a city I’d never visited and hearing stories of loss about people I’d never met, I sat down in a...

Trying To Establish Dominance – #8

Word to the wise: There's really no unimpressive way to win a major championship. Talk all you want about parity. Maybe it means there hasn't been any dominance lately in golf, but there sure have been a lot of flashes of greatness. Even some of golf's older guards...

WNYPGA Callaway Golf Assistant Pro Championship

The Fox Valley Club Tuesday, September 6, 2011 Mark Kirk from Crag Burn GC became the 2011 Champion by posting a two round total of 142 or 2 under par.  The event was played in one day at Fox Valley Club in Lancaster, NY.  Mark Kirk will be joined by Ryan Swanson...

Things I Think I Know…

Does anybody really care that it's been hard for Roger Federer to watch Tiger struggle over the past couple years? I just don't see how this is news on any level. If Roger wants to write a blog post about it and send it to BuffaloGolfer.com - we'll gladly run it. But...

Trying To Establish Dominance – #9

No matter which of the last 13 major champions I put at the 9th spot, there’s going to be controversy. I’ve shuffled and reshuffled the group a few times. My top three are pretty much locked in, but there are a number of ways to get there. I bet you could give this...

Trying To Establish Dominance While Surrounded By Parity – #10

This is going to be knockdown 220-yard four-iron into a cross breeze hard. That’s the conclusion I’ve come to after a day or two of looking at the past 13 major championships and their 13 different winners. How do you rank them? Is there a measurement system? Is there...
