Will It Ever Stop?
Golfers in Western New York have to be drowning in their desire to get out on the golf course. Even in late April we're still battling winds, snow, rain and cold, cold temperatures. It seems like we keep checking the 10-day forecast only to see this...will it ever get...

There are a lot of great holes in Buffalo-Niagara, but which first hole is the best one? We've selected 4 public and 3 private opening salvos and want to know which one you think is the best. [poll id="8"]
Spring Thoughts
As folks celebrate important festivals that herald the arrival of Spring, some thoughts danced a merry tarantella through my mind this Sunday morning. For golf course owners, the first month of the golf season has been a battle. Given the state of droughts in some...
Hold On To Harbour Town
This weekend's Heritage Tournament at Harbour Town Golf Links could be the last if the group doesn't find a new title sponsor to underwrite the approximately $8 million it costs to hold the event. The group is seeking a new partnership and Jim Furyk seems confident...
Sheridan Park Golf Course Review
Like Grover Cleveland, Sheridan Park is another course whose fine 18-hole layout was sacrificed for commerce. Six holes across Sheridan Drive were lost when the land was sold off during the 1960s. The holes that replaced them are serviceable, but it is safe to assume...
Holland Hills Country Club Review
Holland Hills is an enjoyable and demanding country track to the south of the city. Take the 400 and turn right, moving past the town's Speedway. HH moves across side hills in a unique fashion, making the course both logical and unforgettable. Each nine descends into...
Grover Cleveland Golf Course Review
The poster child for the phrase "Appearances can be deceiving," Grover Cleveland has the most unexpected history of any area public track. It lived the first 40 years or so of its life as the Country Club of Buffalo and, in 1912, hosted most of the world's finest...
Elma Meadows Golf Course Review
Elma Meadows is one of two Erie County Parks golf courses. Located on rolling terrain, south-east of the city, Elma Meadows combines an exciting challenge with an enjoyable walk in the park, a guaranteed walk not spoiled! 1 Without a doubt, the most breathtaking first...
Deerwood Golf Course Review
Deerwood golf course is the 27-hole municipal complex in North Tonawanda. In the late 1990s, Scott Witter designed the third nine, the Fawn, elevating Deerwood to a new level of status in western New York public golf. Fawn Nine 1 A fair opening par five, this hole...
The First Round Of The Year: “What The Heck Was That?”
Author's Note: This is a reprint of the first column I ever wrote for BuffaloGolfer.com six years ago. It's about the first round of the year, which I imagine many area golfers are experiencing. Much of it (other than my college references) still rings true today....
Someone To Tee It Up With.
Snow or no snow, it's always fun to find a new golfer to tee it up with. That's what I learned again this past Sunday when I dared the falling snow and frigid temperatures to get my second round of the year in. I'm determined to play 20+ rounds this year and that may...
Top 25 Private Courses of Buffalo-Niagara 2011
Understand from the get-go that this is a private "course" ranking, not a private "club" list. The difference, you ask? Glad to clarify. "Club" includes all the amenities that sometimes accompany the centerpiece (the golf course.) This site enjoys a drink and a dip...
