Porter Cup 2019 Is Here!

Here is what you need to know as the world's best amateur golfers arrive at Niagara Falls country club.

1.  There will be a new champion. Thomas Walsh, the 2019 titleist, is now a professional, plying his trade on PGA Tour Canada.

2.  The tournament runs from Wednesday, July 24th to Saturday, July 27th. There is no 36-hole cut. The event is a 72-hole stroke play championship. Admission is free, parking fee is a donation to local scouting organizations.

3. The Empire state of New York is represented by Ryan Spady (Elmira), Ethan Ng (NYC), Alec Bard (Utica), Will Thomson (Rochester), Jon Pak (Westchester) and local stalwarts David Hanes (Elma) and Ben Reichert (East Amherst).

4. The 2014 (Scott Harvey) and 2018 (Kevin O’Connell) USGA Mid-Amateur champions are in the field. Perhaps the kids won’t run away with this one!

5. The international contingent is strong. Contestants in this year’s 60th playing hail from Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Argentina, Venezuela, Taiwan, Japan and, of course, Canada.

6. Garret Rank, NHL referee and 3rd-place finisher in the 2018 Canadian Amateur, will again tee it up at NFCC.

7. Local favs Ben Reichert (Florida Amateur in June) and David Hanes (Buffalo District match play, also in June) are riding a hot streak. Keep the cup in western New York!

8. Some of the top college programs (Alabama, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Kent State, Duke, Georgia, Illinois, and Virginia) have players competing in this year’s Porter Cup. Learn about all of them here.

9. Every bit of information you need is available on the Porter Cup website.

10. You can’t buy this shirt anymore. That’s rough. Unless…maybe they’ll have some at the pro shop. Who knows?

Three Thousand Words For The Scrambler

If a picture is worth a thousand words, as Arthur Brisbane once confessed, here are three thousand words for my colleague and golfing buddy Kevin "The Scrambler" Lynch. Only he is as conversant in the dialect of English known as golf.        ...

Sebonack Monday AM Back Nine Gallery

Never mind that I looked like a painter today. I might wear the same pair of cargo pants and change white polos for the entire week. You see, it's kinda hot here...and kinda hilly...and kinda natural in spots. If you plan to go tramping through the brush for good...

Reverse Causality

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do! My man Tiger was on form this weekend, and observing the attitudes displayed by Tiger and Rory McIlroy prompted the idea...

Erie County Amateur Year Two: Countdown

The Erie County Amateur debuted brilliantly in 2012, honoring the legacy of championship golf in western New York. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of John McDermott's US Open triumph at Country Club of Buffalo (now Grover Cleveland golf course), an opening 62...

Cink Visceral Reaction Update – Am I Alone in This?

During Morning Drive's postmortem on Rory McIlroy's performance, a question was raised about the last "non-Tiger" feel good story of this magnitude.  Erik & Gary were racking their brains, and kept defaulting back to 1986. All I could do was think about...

Probe – Lazarus Model

When word of my Probe 20/20's demise ran through the Elma Meadows community, I received a number of condolences.  Nobody in the Club had ever seen me without my trusty "anvil on a stick," so its absence was conspicuous. I had accepted that it was over.  The...

Rory’s Ho-Hum Story – I Hope So!

I know the Mouth wrote that a possible Sunday coronation may be ho-hum, but I think we've already proven that it's too late Rory's overall performance to be deemed uninteresting.  Look at all the discussions we've already had just this week about the 22 year-old....
