Porter Cup Media Day Came And Went

A lot of information was shared, and the golf course was opened for a test drive.

We learned a few things on Tuesday the 16th, at the Niagara Falls Country Club. A week from today, 90 of the world’s best amateur golfers will begin competition in the 60th playing of the Porter Cup. What will they face? Who are they? Here is what we know.

~The #7 golfer in the world, Chun An Yu, and the #22 ranked golfer, John Pak, will compete in this year’s tournament;

~Four of the continent’s top mid-amateur golfers will compete. They are: Kevin O’Connell, the 2018 USGA Mid-Amateur champion; Matt Parziale, the 2017 Mid-Am champion; Garrett Rank; and Justin Tereshko;

~The golf course is in the midst of a greens revitalization and renewal. Many of the putting surfaces have been recontoured to add additional undulation, while still offering new hole locations. All 18 will eventually undergo this treatment;

~On the junior side, one of the top commits from the class of 2020, Canon Claycomb of Orlando, will compete. Claycomb will attend the University of Alabama. He has represented the USA on both the Junior Ryder Cup and Junior Presidents Cup teams;

~The golf course will likely offer a lot of putts at birdie, as long as golfers can keep their tee balls in the fairway. Rain is forecast for 3 or 4 of the next 10 days. The remaining days will be overcast, ensuring that the course does not “drought-out.” Unless the tees are waaaaay back on 5, 8, 9, 13 and 17, expect less-than-drive on many of the par-four holes;

~All of the golfers will have four attempts at replicating Tiger Woods’ 12th-hole ace in 1994. If they come as close as this guy, they’ll make birdie more often than not.

In Memory ~ Byrncliff’s 10th Hole Eulogy

This week's discussion of the Best 10th Hole has dredged up some painful memories for me.  In particular, I can't help but be reminded of one of the great holes in Buffalo-Niagara that was lost due to natural disaster several years ago. Of course, "lost" is a bit of a...

Bruce Almighty: Is Running Better Than Golf?

So Bruce Andriatch wrote a column in today's (04/03/2012) Buffalo News, pitting running and golf in a Tale of the Tape (Thanks, Nick Bakay.) As you can imagine, I don't agree that running wins out over golf. In fact, I tackle the same points he does, with a surprising...

Bones Does Commercials

I had to laugh when I finally saw a Bones ad that I liked. Let me explain: Bones is Jim Mackay, Phil Mickelson's caddy since forever. He is employed by Callaway, same as Phil. Callaway jumped on the "let's make a trendy series of humorous commercials" bandwagon that...

Masters Week Is Here

I enjoy watching great golf probably more than I enjoy playing the game. That's a crazy thought for many golfers who measure their summers by rounds played and strokes saved. But, in all honesty, I'd rather watch Sunday at a major championship than play 18 holes of my...

Pfister’s Pupil Atop Kraft Nabisco Championship

EJ Pfister, St. Francis High and East Aurora Country Club product of the 1980s, currently teaches some of the world's best professionals. One of his students, Karin Sjodin, sits atop the Kraft Nabisco Championship (an LPGA major) leader board after 4 holes of the...

Lebron James To Tee It Up In PGA Tour Event

It was a scene Tim Finchem could never have imagined five years ago. The PGA Headquarters media room filled with onlookers and reporters, all hanging on to every word Lebron James uttered. All searching for just why and when James was deciding to pursue golf in the...

USGA Rules Golf Cup Is Too Small

8:00 AM, EST:  In a joint statement with the R&A rules committee, the USGA, after exhaustive research, has decided to increase the size of the golf hole from its current size of 4.25 inches to 7.25 inches.  This ruling will affect all amateur play, but, will...

Forget Going Back, Golf Is Moving Forward

On the heels of the PING announcement of an adjustable shaft for its NOME putter, a number of equipment companies revealed plans to force evolution a step farther. This increased pace ensures that 2012 will long be remembered as a mark twain in the river of...
