Porter Cup Media Day Came And Went

A lot of information was shared, and the golf course was opened for a test drive.

We learned a few things on Tuesday the 16th, at the Niagara Falls Country Club. A week from today, 90 of the world’s best amateur golfers will begin competition in the 60th playing of the Porter Cup. What will they face? Who are they? Here is what we know.

~The #7 golfer in the world, Chun An Yu, and the #22 ranked golfer, John Pak, will compete in this year’s tournament;

~Four of the continent’s top mid-amateur golfers will compete. They are: Kevin O’Connell, the 2018 USGA Mid-Amateur champion; Matt Parziale, the 2017 Mid-Am champion; Garrett Rank; and Justin Tereshko;

~The golf course is in the midst of a greens revitalization and renewal. Many of the putting surfaces have been recontoured to add additional undulation, while still offering new hole locations. All 18 will eventually undergo this treatment;

~On the junior side, one of the top commits from the class of 2020, Canon Claycomb of Orlando, will compete. Claycomb will attend the University of Alabama. He has represented the USA on both the Junior Ryder Cup and Junior Presidents Cup teams;

~The golf course will likely offer a lot of putts at birdie, as long as golfers can keep their tee balls in the fairway. Rain is forecast for 3 or 4 of the next 10 days. The remaining days will be overcast, ensuring that the course does not “drought-out.” Unless the tees are waaaaay back on 5, 8, 9, 13 and 17, expect less-than-drive on many of the par-four holes;

~All of the golfers will have four attempts at replicating Tiger Woods’ 12th-hole ace in 1994. If they come as close as this guy, they’ll make birdie more often than not.

Operation Don’t Suck – Take 2

During my first golf lesson last week, the pro talking to me needed at least all 10 fingers to count out the ways my swing was broken. He could have lamented on the flaws, but he didn’t. He handed me the club and said, “let’s focus on your fingers.” After watching me...

Golf Rules Need Some Flexibility

What if an NBA fan called in a replay of Lebron James, arguably the best player ever, ‘traveling’ in game seven of the NBA finals. Then the NBA decided those two points didn’t count and the Miami Heat lost. Or what if an MLS fan called in an offside’s goal in one of...

UFC 128…PGA Tour Cage Over 17th Green At TPC

We have the site...the 17th green at Sawgrass...the Island. All we need now are the contestants. Besides the obvious (and pathetic) Tiger v. Jesper, what great UFC battles might the PGA Tour provide? Think Bubba could finally beat Kaymer? Does Levin want another crack...

Tiger redux

OK, the world now has a new #1 golfer...Martin Kaymer.  Martin is no doubt very talented and he seems to be a real rising star, but, does he have the ability to go the distance? Just ask Lee Westwood who flamed out almost as fast as he ascended to the top. Watching...

Jordan Spieth Update

In case you were wondering, Jordan Spieth will be in the field at the Byron Nelson Championship this May. Spieth, 17, contended for the lead last year despite his youth, lack of experience and being a relative unknown. He's accepted a sponsor exemption. This is a...

Frog Hair Vids and Pics

Scrambler, Mouth, Rico and Mo' (that is I) shook off the winter snow on February's penultimate day at Frog Hair on Transit Road in Williamsville. The space is as welcoming as ever, with roaring fire, comfortable chairs and both public and private AboutGolf booths for...

Mo’ Golf Heading To Round Four

Shows how nutty I am...can't even read my own selections.  Kuchar, Moore and Kaymer are still alive for me from my original Golfweek bracket.  I have Kuchar and Moore losing in the quarters and Kaymer winning to the semis. I've moved up to the top 1000 in the GW...

Quick Thoughts After Day 2 – WGC

My bracket is busted. My pride is lessened. Most of the golfers I selected are going home. There's probably no credible reason for me to offer my thoughts, but I imagine I feel like most golf fans...so here we go. ~ Martin Kaymer is the only guy left who can really...
