Porter Cup Media Day Came And Went

A lot of information was shared, and the golf course was opened for a test drive.

We learned a few things on Tuesday the 16th, at the Niagara Falls Country Club. A week from today, 90 of the world’s best amateur golfers will begin competition in the 60th playing of the Porter Cup. What will they face? Who are they? Here is what we know.

~The #7 golfer in the world, Chun An Yu, and the #22 ranked golfer, John Pak, will compete in this year’s tournament;

~Four of the continent’s top mid-amateur golfers will compete. They are: Kevin O’Connell, the 2018 USGA Mid-Amateur champion; Matt Parziale, the 2017 Mid-Am champion; Garrett Rank; and Justin Tereshko;

~The golf course is in the midst of a greens revitalization and renewal. Many of the putting surfaces have been recontoured to add additional undulation, while still offering new hole locations. All 18 will eventually undergo this treatment;

~On the junior side, one of the top commits from the class of 2020, Canon Claycomb of Orlando, will compete. Claycomb will attend the University of Alabama. He has represented the USA on both the Junior Ryder Cup and Junior Presidents Cup teams;

~The golf course will likely offer a lot of putts at birdie, as long as golfers can keep their tee balls in the fairway. Rain is forecast for 3 or 4 of the next 10 days. The remaining days will be overcast, ensuring that the course does not “drought-out.” Unless the tees are waaaaay back on 5, 8, 9, 13 and 17, expect less-than-drive on many of the par-four holes;

~All of the golfers will have four attempts at replicating Tiger Woods’ 12th-hole ace in 1994. If they come as close as this guy, they’ll make birdie more often than not.

From Willowdale To Westwood 5: The Scrambler Files

This is the fifth in a series of posts by The Scrambler (Kevin Lynch) who appears to have lost the will or ability to post under his own name. Putting that trivial element aside, the Scrambler is nothing if not a top-shelf bloodhound. His sleuthing first appeared this...

WNY PGA Junior Tour Results @ Pine Acres

Venturing south of the NY/PA border is always a solid time. Pine Acres presents a pure test of woodland golf and it did not disappoint on Sunday. Emily Kase signed for 48 strokes to win the Girls 9 hole division while Marissa Delmonaco won the Girls 18 hole bracket...

Erie County Amateur: Final Results

Although the weather sites predicted dire conditions and the skies threatened to open up from time to time, no downpour materialized to threaten a second day of great golf at Elma Meadows golf club. For the record, Chelsea Dantonio of Lancaster continued her march...

Erie County Amateur – Scrambler’s Day 1 Thoughts

In my Erie County Amateur Preview, I felt pretty confident that Clyde Webber's decades-old course record would hold up well against the area's best this weekend.  After watching the opening tee shots from several groups, my conviction waned a little bit.  I was seeing...

2013 Erie County Amateur: First Round Recap

Elma Meadows presented quite a different tournament experience from Grover Cleveland as the 2nd year of ECA got underway this morning. Golfers used to the openness of the site of the 1912 US Open were cold-cocked with tree-lined fairways and ultra-small greens at the...

Tom’s Featured Tip: Swingers & Hitters

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do! I was just reading Homer Kelly's "The Golfing Machine" for the umpteenth time. It's a great read, but difficult to decipher...

Lightning

It's a minor miracle that I'm here to type this piece on lightning. On Wednesday, I met some friends for a quick nine holes around 5:15 in the afternoon. We teed off the back nine at a local layout, beneath sunshine and blue skies. The fellow, having played the front...

Erie County Amateur – Holes / Players to Watch

In Part 1 of my Erie County Amateur preview, I discussed how Elma will defend itself against the area's best amateurs.  In this edition, I hope to highlight some holes / set-up possibilities in greater detail, as well as discuss a few players to watch during the...

Scrambler’s Erie County Amateur Preview – Part 1

Ever since the thrilling conclusion to the inaugural Erie County Amateur, the Scrambler has been looking forward to this weekend.  As many long-time readers know, I first took up the game at Turkey Run, but most of my golfing life was spent at Elma Meadows.  My first...
