People need to start sending Lee Westwood some love in less than 140 characters. The world’s #1 ranked player is growing frustrated with the constant negativity and criticism he’s receiving on his Twitter account and may soon stop tweeting entirely.

“It’s just pathetic,” Westwood said. “It’s there to interact with people and give them an idea of stuff they might not ordinarily be able to engage with. But some always take it too far and spoil it.”

As a follower of Westwood on Twitter, I hope people ease up on him and he keeps using the social platform. There are millions of irrelevant tweets posted every day, but I love some of the tidbits, info and images golfers post. Several players like Westwood, Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter even use the platform to talk sports and golf with one another. It truly does enable us to see these athletes in another light and I enjoy that.

The problem with Westwood’s situation is that he’s going to get even more negativity now that he went public with his thoughts. He’s revealed that he’s a bit chapped at some of the comments, that just means people will try harder to light his fire and anger him. He’d have been better never acknowledging them and shutting down the account without a word.

Will Westwood or won’t he? We used to ask that about him chances of winning a major championship. Now, we’re left to wonder if he’ll consider to tweet.
