When Tim Clark tees off in the first round of tomorrow’s The Players Championship, he’ll begin defending his title from the previous year despite a 2011 season plagued by injury. It wasn’t until late-April that he began to feel he’d be able to play and defend his title at all. In the past four months, Clark’s only start came at The Masters where he was cut.

Clark has been struggling with a bad case of tendinitis in his right elbow for pretty much the entire season.

“At this point with the injuries I’ve had this year, I’m just really excited to be here,” Clark said Wednesday. “I feel like I’m going to be able to play, which two weeks ago I wasn’t sure if that would be the case.”

Clark’s win last year was his first on the PGA Tour after 206 starts and eight runner-up finishes. He hails from South Africa, home to two of the previous three major championship winners (Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel).
