Takes advantage of leader's mistakes
Birdie at 17 clinches victoryWe made some predictions after Saturday’s wild, 3rd round of the 61st Porter Cup. Very few of them came true. Unless we’re playing with house money, the wallet stays in the pocket! Back to the golf. Here’s what we thought might happen:
- Chun An Yu would post a 4th consecutive round in the 60s, and take the victory jacket home to Arizona State and Taiwan.
- Someone would go low and threaten the course record of 60.
- Davis Lamb would be that guy, given his penchant for populating his scorecard with birdies.
What we should have known would happen:
- An Aussie in the hunt is a sure bet for a comeback. Aiden Didone’s 4th round wasn’t pretty (3 over par from holes 9-14) but today wasn’t a beauty contest.
- 4 rounds in the 60s (unless your name is Didone) for a Porter Cup rookie is unheard of. Chun An Yu ballooned to a 74 and a tie for 2nd at -8, 2 behind the leader.
- John Pak came back on Saturday. He also posted 4 rounds in the 60s (not a rookie, so there!) and took the clubhouse lead at 8-under par. At that moment, the final trio stood on the 16th tee. Success over the final triumvirate of holes at Niagara Falls country club is never a given.
What did happen:
- Tyler Strafacci blinked. In the mix at 7-under following a nice birdie putt at the 10th, Strafacci came home in +3. He fell to -4 on the week and solo 10th place.
- Two mid-amateurs found their way into the top five. Matt Parziale and Garrett Rank finished T5 after rounds of 70 and 65, respectively.
- Chun An Yu forgot how to drive the golf ball. He opened and closed the front nine with double bogeys, and fought his swing with the long sticks the entire day. He made a 3rd double at the diabolical 12th, and could not make enough birdies (4) on the day to counter the mistakes.
- 66 was the low round of the day. 4-under was high, considering the go-for-broke mentality needed on day four. Perhaps the leaders needlessly played too conservatively, or perhaps the breezes along the escarpment forced them to do so.
The hoped-for, jump-start to the USA Walker Cup side did not materialize for anyone but John Pak. Cole Hammer, Akshay Battia and Stewart Hagestad (none present at the Porter Cup) were named to the team earlier in the week, leaving seven open spots for candidates. Pak is currently listed at 24th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, but his T2 should vault him inside the top 20, and make him one of the top 10 Americans on the list. The next two tournaments (Western and US Amateurs) will determine his fate.
For now, the leadership of the Porter Cup committees take a well-earned rest. The grounds crew allows the course to rest a bit. The golfers take to the road and the skies, headed for points unknown across the amateur golf world. With that in mind, have a look at four important moments in the walk to victory of Aiden Didone, whose WAGR ranking of 696 will certainly improve next week.
Hickory Golf – Gettin’ “Jigger” With it!
Yes, I know that was a lame pun. But, there's something I needed to admit to everyone. "Hello, my name is Scrambler, and I'm a Hickory Golf Addict." It happened over 36 glorious holes in Cowlesville this weekend, but I am officially hooked. Before this weekend, I...
Best in Buffalo-Niagara: Scrambler’s Omission Series ~ Hole #11
Continuing through our process, most of my "first pass" favorites were also selected by the nominating committee. But a few were overlooked and worthy of mention. As is often the case, this week's edition is prominently affected by topography. St. Bonaventure ~ 472...
Bubba Wins Bubba’s Way
Do you want to know what’s crazy about the ridiculous shot Bubba Watson authored on the second playoff hole at Augusta National Sunday evening to win The Masters? It really wasn’t that hard. I’m serious, it wasn’t. Sure, it was a blind 155-yard hard draw off of the...
Why No Canadian Courses In “Best” Voting?
@buffalolooper on Twitter has vehemently objected a second time to the exclusion of Canadian courses from our "Best Nth Hole in Buffalo-Niagara" series of elections. His current objection centers around the 11th at Cherry Hill (Ridgeway, Ontario), a subtle and harsh...
Diamond Hawk Golf Course: Then & Now
(This post was originally published in 2009. It is republished today for its interest level. One of the most rewarding golf stories of the past five years was the opening of Diamond Hawk in Cheektowaga. The course went on the drawing board as a town project in 1991,...
Tiger’s Mechanics
Am I the only one or is everyone else tired of hearing about Tiger and his mechanics? It seems like nothing more than an excuse to address his real issues. Yes, last month's win at Bay Hill may justify Tiger's faith in his new swing, but, I'm just not buying it. I'm...
Playing Augusta National This Weekend
A fourth amateur made the cut this weekend, although his score won't count. Unexpected but with precedent, a spot just opened up for a quick 36 holes. Funny part is, Jeff Knox wasn't in the original field. He's the fellow that will play with US Amateur champion Kelly...
Best 11th Hole in Buffalo-Niagara: Put It To A Vote
The Best 11th hole vote is open for debate. It features a Southwestern battle with Elkdale and Moon Brook, a top private club tussle matching Crag Burn and CCBuffalo, along with Fox Valley, Elma Meadows, Terry Hills and Glen Oak. As in previous weeks, par 4 and 5...
Arrowhead Opens Back Nine With Win
Arrowhead's tenth hole staved off competition from seven other back-nine openers to win the best 10th Hole in Buffalo-Niagara vote. The classic risk-reward par five, a Scott Witter original, garnered nearly 200 of the 508 votes cast and became the 10th consecutive,...
No One Needs Augusta Green In Summer
If you read golf online, you've seen this mentioned before. I'm posting it for our viewers along the Niagara Frontier, for the benefit of all course owners, country club superintendents and anyone else tired of client requests for a 100% green golf course, all the...
Bob Labbance Writings ~ 10th Hole Nominated Courses
Before an untimely death in 2008, we were honored to have worked with Bob Labbance. For too short a period, Bob provided some writings for BuffaloGolfer.com, related to the contributions of Wayne Stiles on our area courses. Coincidentally, two of these courses were...
