Porter Cup 2019 Is Here!

Here is what you need to know as the world's best amateur golfers arrive at Niagara Falls country club.

1.  There will be a new champion. Thomas Walsh, the 2019 titleist, is now a professional, plying his trade on PGA Tour Canada.

2.  The tournament runs from Wednesday, July 24th to Saturday, July 27th. There is no 36-hole cut. The event is a 72-hole stroke play championship. Admission is free, parking fee is a donation to local scouting organizations.

3. The Empire state of New York is represented by Ryan Spady (Elmira), Ethan Ng (NYC), Alec Bard (Utica), Will Thomson (Rochester), Jon Pak (Westchester) and local stalwarts David Hanes (Elma) and Ben Reichert (East Amherst).

4. The 2014 (Scott Harvey) and 2018 (Kevin O’Connell) USGA Mid-Amateur champions are in the field. Perhaps the kids won’t run away with this one!

5. The international contingent is strong. Contestants in this year’s 60th playing hail from Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Argentina, Venezuela, Taiwan, Japan and, of course, Canada.

6. Garret Rank, NHL referee and 3rd-place finisher in the 2018 Canadian Amateur, will again tee it up at NFCC.

7. Local favs Ben Reichert (Florida Amateur in June) and David Hanes (Buffalo District match play, also in June) are riding a hot streak. Keep the cup in western New York!

8. Some of the top college programs (Alabama, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Kent State, Duke, Georgia, Illinois, and Virginia) have players competing in this year’s Porter Cup. Learn about all of them here.

9. Every bit of information you need is available on the Porter Cup website.

10. You can’t buy this shirt anymore. That’s rough. Unless…maybe they’ll have some at the pro shop. Who knows?

Bargain Bin: True Linkswear True Motion Golf Shoes

I recall when True Linkswear came into the lexicon as a golf shoe unlike any other on the market. It wasn't promoted for its performance, for its flash appearance, its connection to a superstar from another sport, or any attribute save one: it was a walking golfer's...

2016 Interview Series: Holiday Valley Resort

Places can't speak, can they? Not in the human manner, but they can convey meaning via their characteristics, their offerings and the simple reward of being there. Holiday Valley is just under a two-hour drive from metro Buffalo, but it's a foreign land for many who...

Tom’s Featured Tip: Don’t Do This Like The Pros

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective. For most tour pro's, the club selection of choice for chipping is a 58 degree or higer lofted wedge. For 95% of the people reading this tip, that should never be your go...

For simplicity, all advice on actual swings or drills is provided from a right handed perspective. I'm currently giving a student lessons who has developed - or adopted - a very strong right hand grip as his natural grip. I say adopted not developed, because he's...

OnCore Avant Golf Ball Review

OnCore debuted its hollow, steel-core golf balls a few years back, with the Omen and EVO models. It followed up with the MA 1.0 in 2015 and released the Avant in 2016. The most glaring difference, economically speaking, is the price: the MA retails for $36 per dozen,...

2016 Interview Series: Aaron Alpern

Aaron Alpern became something of a folk hero, for 24 hours, when it was discovered that the Buffalo native was the man on the bag for Smylie Kaufman. Kaufman had just played a remarkable third round at the 2016 Masters and had moved into second place. His reward was a...

More 18s of the USA: Buffalo Creek and The Preserve

Buffalo Creek and The Preserve are the subjects of this installment of More 18s of the USA. We imagined that golf season was winding down in Buffalo-Niagara, so our attention momentarily turned to domes, trips and television. However, Mother Nature in the guise of El...
