Porter Cup 2019 Is Here!
Here is what you need to know as the world's best amateur golfers arrive at Niagara Falls country club.1. There will be a new champion. Thomas Walsh, the 2019 titleist, is now a professional, plying his trade on PGA Tour Canada.
2. The tournament runs from Wednesday, July 24th to Saturday, July 27th. There is no 36-hole cut. The event is a 72-hole stroke play championship. Admission is free, parking fee is a donation to local scouting organizations.
3. The Empire state of New York is represented by Ryan Spady (Elmira), Ethan Ng (NYC), Alec Bard (Utica), Will Thomson (Rochester), Jon Pak (Westchester) and local stalwarts David Hanes (Elma) and Ben Reichert (East Amherst).
4. The 2014 (Scott Harvey) and 2018 (Kevin O’Connell) USGA Mid-Amateur champions are in the field. Perhaps the kids won’t run away with this one!

6. Garret Rank, NHL referee and 3rd-place finisher in the 2018 Canadian Amateur, will again tee it up at NFCC.
7. Local favs Ben Reichert (Florida Amateur in June) and David Hanes (Buffalo District match play, also in June) are riding a hot streak. Keep the cup in western New York!
8. Some of the top college programs (Alabama, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Kent State, Duke, Georgia, Illinois, and Virginia) have players competing in this year’s Porter Cup. Learn about all of them here.
9. Every bit of information you need is available on the Porter Cup website.
10. You can’t buy this shirt anymore. That’s rough. Unless…maybe they’ll have some at the pro shop. Who knows?
Swings And Misses
For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do! When I teach advanced players, I encourage then to have a one sided miss. For most of my right handed players, this miss...
PGA Championship Reaches Midway Mark At Oak Hill
Do you know what stinks? Being in the half of the draw of a major championship that gets stuck with the lousy weather. It rained yesterday on the afternoon wave, causing a delay and disrupting their games. Guess what happened on Friday? It rained in the morning,...
BDGA Men’s Individual: Round Two
Is the rout on? Only one contestant broke 70 today and it happened to be the fellow who took the lead on Thursday. Raman Luthra posted a three-under 69 to take a seven-stroke lead over club mate Tony Hejna. Luthra and Hejna are the only two contestants below par after...
Frank Commentary and Loyalty – Steve & Rory
For years, we have been conditioned to expect the bland, non-answer from those in professional Golf. No one personified this more than Tiger Woods, and his gamesmanship with the press was annoying, but tolerated in light of his on-course accomplishments....
BDGA Men’s Individual: Round One
The wily veteran (who happened to be playing on his home course) showed the field he's not ready to relinquish his spot at the top just yet. Raman Luthra, with hands of a surgeon, fashioned a five-under par 67 to take a three-stroke lead over two players after one...

PGA Championship Tuesday: Interpret Phil’s Comments
"The way the PGA has set it up with the graduated rough, the way they have rewarded good shots, and they have not overly-penalized poorly struck shots, they have severely penalized poorly struck ones. I just think it's incredibly well thought out and should identify...

PGA Championship Monday: Practice Round Walkabout
It has been ten years since I last saw Oak Hill country club. The summer of 2003 was my 37th on this earth, as this now signals my 47th. Our children were in the prime of their youth and I was playing very little golf. I was working with great friends to build this...
The Scramble: A Primer
My tournament play since the Erie County Amateur has been restricted to two scramble events. Despite making no putts (I blame the contagion on my own self), my teams place 1st and 3rd and we came away with some swag. More importantly, we preserved our various...
