Porter Cup Media Day Came And Went

A lot of information was shared, and the golf course was opened for a test drive.

We learned a few things on Tuesday the 16th, at the Niagara Falls Country Club. A week from today, 90 of the world’s best amateur golfers will begin competition in the 60th playing of the Porter Cup. What will they face? Who are they? Here is what we know.

~The #7 golfer in the world, Chun An Yu, and the #22 ranked golfer, John Pak, will compete in this year’s tournament;

~Four of the continent’s top mid-amateur golfers will compete. They are: Kevin O’Connell, the 2018 USGA Mid-Amateur champion; Matt Parziale, the 2017 Mid-Am champion; Garrett Rank; and Justin Tereshko;

~The golf course is in the midst of a greens revitalization and renewal. Many of the putting surfaces have been recontoured to add additional undulation, while still offering new hole locations. All 18 will eventually undergo this treatment;

~On the junior side, one of the top commits from the class of 2020, Canon Claycomb of Orlando, will compete. Claycomb will attend the University of Alabama. He has represented the USA on both the Junior Ryder Cup and Junior Presidents Cup teams;

~The golf course will likely offer a lot of putts at birdie, as long as golfers can keep their tee balls in the fairway. Rain is forecast for 3 or 4 of the next 10 days. The remaining days will be overcast, ensuring that the course does not “drought-out.” Unless the tees are waaaaay back on 5, 8, 9, 13 and 17, expect less-than-drive on many of the par-four holes;

~All of the golfers will have four attempts at replicating Tiger Woods’ 12th-hole ace in 1994. If they come as close as this guy, they’ll make birdie more often than not.

Operation Don’t Suck – The First Round of 2011

Those of you who visit our site regularly know I've been taking lessons since early March in hopes of playing better golf. Yesterday morning at Ironwood Golf Course I played my first 18 holes of 2011. The result: I'm improving and only sucked for about 2.5 holes. If...

The Masters post mortem

Random post Masters thoughts: While watching Charl Schwartzel's crazy run to the green jacket, I couldn't help but wonder if his parents misspelled Carl or Charles when filling out his birth certificate. If Schwartzel had finished at -10 would the playoff format been...

The Greatest Masters Ever?

Read me out. Charl Schwartzel birdied the final four holes to win the Masters by two strokes. That had never been done before...by anyone. Jason Day birdied the last two holes to finish tied for the green button with Adam Scott, who birdied 11, 14 and 16 to take what...

Tiger Makes It More Fun.

Love him, hate him, want to chase him with a four iron...Tiger Woods is a welcome sight up near the top of The Masters leaderboard. When the time comes, golf will be just fine without Tiger (see McIlroy, Day, Mahan, Fowler, Johnson, Watson....) but since he's only in...

The Masters Hype

Disclaimer:  I have never seen Augusta National Golf Course in person. Yes, I love watching The Masters on TV every year.  It has a large number of things in its favor:  it is usually a tightly contested tournament,  the course always looks like something out of a...

Dawn, Day Two @ Augusta

-I hang out online with a bunch of guys who abhor all the perfection of Augusta. They prefer fast and firm, natural browns, etc. The unfortunate thing is, Augusta has that during its down time, which is never during Masters week. Last year, I played a course called...

Quick Hits After Day 1 At Augusta

A few quick  thoughts after day one at The Masters and just before day two gets underway ~ Rory McIlroy is boy genius kind of good when it comes to golf. It's going to be hard for him to hold the lead all the way through and win, but he's going to win a lot of major...

Day One @ The Masters of 2011

Things I know for certain: -17 and 18 are difficult, just ask all the dudes who bogeyed them... -This is one heck of a group of amateurs...they are a combined +5 at the moment... -Ricky Barnes has got some genetic distortion called Andy North disease, that allows him...
