Porter Cup Media Day Came And Went

A lot of information was shared, and the golf course was opened for a test drive.

We learned a few things on Tuesday the 16th, at the Niagara Falls Country Club. A week from today, 90 of the world’s best amateur golfers will begin competition in the 60th playing of the Porter Cup. What will they face? Who are they? Here is what we know.

~The #7 golfer in the world, Chun An Yu, and the #22 ranked golfer, John Pak, will compete in this year’s tournament;

~Four of the continent’s top mid-amateur golfers will compete. They are: Kevin O’Connell, the 2018 USGA Mid-Amateur champion; Matt Parziale, the 2017 Mid-Am champion; Garrett Rank; and Justin Tereshko;

~The golf course is in the midst of a greens revitalization and renewal. Many of the putting surfaces have been recontoured to add additional undulation, while still offering new hole locations. All 18 will eventually undergo this treatment;

~On the junior side, one of the top commits from the class of 2020, Canon Claycomb of Orlando, will compete. Claycomb will attend the University of Alabama. He has represented the USA on both the Junior Ryder Cup and Junior Presidents Cup teams;

~The golf course will likely offer a lot of putts at birdie, as long as golfers can keep their tee balls in the fairway. Rain is forecast for 3 or 4 of the next 10 days. The remaining days will be overcast, ensuring that the course does not “drought-out.” Unless the tees are waaaaay back on 5, 8, 9, 13 and 17, expect less-than-drive on many of the par-four holes;

~All of the golfers will have four attempts at replicating Tiger Woods’ 12th-hole ace in 1994. If they come as close as this guy, they’ll make birdie more often than not.

Pro Tip: Cure For The Flying Right Elbow

My wife and I were in the Rochester NY area and we stopped at an Italian restaurant to grab a bite before seeing a movie. As often happens to me at odd moments, I had a brainstorm - or as my friends and family often refer to it - an attack of brain gas. I challenged...

Glen Oak GC Review

Located on Smith Road in East Amherst, NY, Glen Oak Golf Course sits in the middle of a cluster of single family homes, townhouses, condos and patio homes.  A Robert Trent Jones design, Glen Oak was opened in 1969.  A common misconception is that the course was...

Chestnut Hill CC Review

I'll confess that I (Mo' Golf) have yet to play Chestnut Hill. I toured the course in June of 2012 and shot over 400 images of the course, so I can claim to know it visually, if not intimately. What I saw impressed me beyond words. Chestnut Hill occupies a splendid...

Five Great Matches On Wednesday

This is the only golf tournament of the year I wish was played backwards. As a 7-5 working man, I won’t see the majority of the 64 matches that make up this week’s AGC Accenture Match Play Championship. If only they could set it up where one match was played Wednesday...

A Bad Day of Golf

I can’t positively remember his name, although I am fairly certain that it was Fred or Frank.  My certainty comes from the fact that after my one and only golf encounter with this guy, I attached an unflattering (although, I must admit, quite accurate) adjective to...

Operation Don’t Suck: Part One

Enough with the worm-burners, wayward divots and weak slices – Operation Don’t Suck (ODS) begins this week.

Rather than feel shamed and hide the fact I’m going to take golf lessons for the first time in my life, I’m going to celebrate it. My first lesson is this Tuesday and you can add it to the public record.
