Porter Cup Media Day Came And Went

A lot of information was shared, and the golf course was opened for a test drive.

We learned a few things on Tuesday the 16th, at the Niagara Falls Country Club. A week from today, 90 of the world’s best amateur golfers will begin competition in the 60th playing of the Porter Cup. What will they face? Who are they? Here is what we know.

~The #7 golfer in the world, Chun An Yu, and the #22 ranked golfer, John Pak, will compete in this year’s tournament;

~Four of the continent’s top mid-amateur golfers will compete. They are: Kevin O’Connell, the 2018 USGA Mid-Amateur champion; Matt Parziale, the 2017 Mid-Am champion; Garrett Rank; and Justin Tereshko;

~The golf course is in the midst of a greens revitalization and renewal. Many of the putting surfaces have been recontoured to add additional undulation, while still offering new hole locations. All 18 will eventually undergo this treatment;

~On the junior side, one of the top commits from the class of 2020, Canon Claycomb of Orlando, will compete. Claycomb will attend the University of Alabama. He has represented the USA on both the Junior Ryder Cup and Junior Presidents Cup teams;

~The golf course will likely offer a lot of putts at birdie, as long as golfers can keep their tee balls in the fairway. Rain is forecast for 3 or 4 of the next 10 days. The remaining days will be overcast, ensuring that the course does not “drought-out.” Unless the tees are waaaaay back on 5, 8, 9, 13 and 17, expect less-than-drive on many of the par-four holes;

~All of the golfers will have four attempts at replicating Tiger Woods’ 12th-hole ace in 1994. If they come as close as this guy, they’ll make birdie more often than not.

Porter Cup 2013: The Locals and Photo Gallery 3

Took a cold shower this morning...of Porter Cup reality. I figured out that Buff Ringer shot 72-65-70-70=277, to finish solo 16th at the 2013 Porter Cup. If you visit the official scoreboard for the tournament, you won't find Buff Ringer listed. That's the lowest...

Final Round Photo Gallery Take 2

I know that Jay Skurski doesn't write headlines for his Buffalo News stories. I know that because he would never take credit for today's header. "Pendrith sings in the rain to win Porter Cup." Not since Jimmy Demaret and Don Cherry have any golfers done much singing....

On Thursday, July 25th, the WNY PGA junior tour rolled into Macedon (near Rochester) and five division winners were decided. Cassandra Uebelacker (Girls 9-hole, 49); Jeremy Summerson (Boys 9-hole, 39); Lauren Kase and Sarah Beckith (Girls 18-hole, 87); Nick Waite...

Porter Cup Summary and Saturday Photo Gallery 1

Weather Review: To paraphrase the great Seve, "it sunny, it sunny, it sunny, it rainy (but only just a little bit.)" 3.5 days of clear, dry skies and one afternoon of manageable precipitation equals a win for the tournament brass. Par-Breaker Review: Birdies, not...

Clubhead Speed

For the sake of simplicity, all advice on swings and drills is provided from a right handed perspective; lefties .... well, you know what to do! A concept of the golf swing that we all need to understand when it comes to clubhead speed, is that it needs to happen at...

Porter Cup Day Three: Things You Think I Don’t Know

Friday was moving day for a number of golfers all across the Niagara Falls country club. The week's low of 64 (Justin Shin, round one) was eclipsed by two golfers and 28 golfers (one-third of the field) broke par. That, friends, is just the beginning of what went down...

WNY PGA Junior Tour @ Peek’n Peak

Danny Weimer went fireworks-crazy at Peek'n Peak's lower course, firing a 67 for low round of the Tour thus far, in any division. Weimer's five-under par effort earned a him a five-stroke victory in the 16-18 division. Other bracket winners in Clymer, New York were...

Porter Cup 2013: One More Thursday Gallery

The good thing about a big lead is desperation. Every golfer in the field senses the need to go low and some pretty amazing scores result. The good thing about a tightly-packed leader board is inclusion. The tournament field believes that "it" has a chance, if only it...

Matthew Stasiak Adds NYS Amateur To Erie County Title

When all hope was lost, the golf gods reversed themselves. Matt Stasiak of Fox Valley Club was four under par for the day on the 17th tee. He walked off the penultimate green two under, having double-bogied the 395 yard hole. Victor Fox had led the tournament since...

Thursday Photo Gallery Part Two @ Porter Cup

65s ruled the roost on day two, four of them in fact. Five-under par over 18 holes makes a lot of first-round pain go away. In the case of Tyler Dunlap, it moved him from a tie for second to the halfway lead. Tyler Dunlap -- T2 to 1 Brady Watt -- T16 to 5 Tim...

Thursday Morning Photo Gallery @ The Porter Cup

Beau Hossler took a run at the top spot early, following his opening 65 with a solid 68, to stand at -7 through two rounds. First-round leader Justin Shin decided that he liked first place and he kept a grip on it, backing up his 64 with a three-under 67 to take a...
