First Round Tee Times: Top 7 Groups To Follow
Our experts have combed the tee sheet, and these are the 7 groups you should follow. The Porter Cup tees off at 7:30 am on Wednesday the 24th. 1st and 2nd round groups are the same, then players will be reassigned, based on score. Early groups on Wednesday go off later on Thursday, and vice-versa. 2nd round tee times are either 2.5 hours later or earlier, depending on 1st round position. We’ve determined that the following groups are the critical ones to see on Wednesday and Thursday. By trophy time on Saturday, the winner will have emerged from one of these groups. You’ll be able to brag that you followed the champion before anyone else knew the story. Here goes!
1. 11:10/8:40 Kevin O’Connell, the current USGA Mid-Amateur champion, tees off with Noah Norton (Georgia Tech) and Josh Whalen (Kent State.) O’Connell is the most likely mid-am to challenge for the title.
2. 11:20/8:50 Includes Matt Parziale (2017 US Mid-Am champ), Garrett Rank, and Tyler Strafaci. 2 are out of college, while Strafaci is a senior at Georgia Tech. He and Parziale hope to catch the eye of Nathaniel Crosby, USA Walker Cup captain, who will be on site Friday and Saturday. Strafaci finished 5th last week at the Players Amateur.
3. 11:00/8:30 The top two golfers by WAGR Ranking are in this game. Chun An Yu (#7) and John Pak (#22) will tee off with Scott Harvey (2014 US Mid-Am champion.) On paper, the strongest grouping.
4. 9:00/11:30 Local favorite #1, Ben Reichert of East Amherst, competes with Koichiro Ishika (Arizona State) and John Catanzaro (Georgia).
5. 8:00/10:30 Local favorite #2, David Hanes of Elma, matches up with John Felitto (Notre Dame) and Sudarshan Yellamaraju (Canadian Junior Team).
6. 8:20/10:50 Matthew Riedel, an incoming freshman at Vanderbilt, goes off with Blake Dyer (Florida) and Bradley Reeves (Arizona.)
7. 11:30/9:00 James Piot (Michigan State) had a top-25 finish last week at the Players Amateur. He pegs it with Herbie Aikens and Adrian Norford, possibly the first golfer from St. Kitts to compete in the Porter Cup.

For one night only, Buffalo renounced the title of hockey town, thanks to two of its young golf talents. Maren Cipolla of Buffalo and Ben Reichert of East Amherst played inconceivable golf down the stretch and won New York State Golf Association junior titles at Cedar...
Denny McCarthy Triumphant At 2015 Porter Cup
I know a young lady who has a thing for Denny McCarthy. She is a massive golf fan and has been singing his praises since he first stopped by the Porter Cup, prior to his freshman year at the University of Virginia. "This is his year," she would tell me, and she came...

Darius Oliver is in the midst of a 90-day tour of the USA, in search of great golf. He is no stranger to the beast, as he has been here (and seemingly, everywhere else) before. Oliver is the creator and caretaker of Planet Golf, two tomes of golf course reviews and a...
Toronto 2015: End Of Day Saturday Report
Moving Day will now be known as Día de la mudanza, in honor of Marcelo Rozo. The Colombian went barmy and berserk with nine birdies and nine pars, to tie the competitive course record of 63 and jump all the way from Cali or Bogotá into second place in the Men's...
Toronto 2015: Saturday Is Moving Day, Indeed
As sure as there were hockey pucks for paperweights on the first tee at Angus Glen, the leaders and the followers in the Men's division knew that standing pat at par was not worth much on Pan Am Games Saturday. This was not the case for the women, where anything under...
Toronto 2015: Friday Afternoon Photo Gallery
Moving day is traditionally recognized as the Saturday/Third round of a golfing event. For the Pan Am Games of Toronto 2015, the vans might have arrived a day early. A great number of golfers were most likely eliminated from medal contention by Friday's uncooperative...
Toronto2015: Friday at the PanAm Games
Day two of the #Toronto2015 golf competition at the PanAm Games broke colder and wetter than its predecessor. Call it a steady drizzle, intermittent rain, or whatever you like. It took guts and focus to grind out a score as golfers reached the halfway point of the...
Toronto 2015: Golf Returns To IOC Competition
For those who follow Brasil 2016, it's known that golf will return to the Olympic Games for two cycles at minimum. From my vantage point, it's a dozen years late. The IOC might have taken advantage of all that Tiger Fever around 2000 and fast-tracked the...

A Quick Nine at South Park
I can count on one hand the number of area courses I haven't played. Of the private clubs, only Wanakah has escaped my attention. On the public side, places like Hillview in Fredonia, Chestnut Hill in Darien, Rolling Acres in Pike, and Eden Valley in Eden have slipped...
